DeLay Scandal Apology

You may have seen me insinuate that Tom DeLay’s PAC had a donation-swapping system going to take corporate contributions and put them into Congressional Races (where they are illegal). I apologize for creating the impression that something improper was going on. Apparently, they only: “...sent $190,000 in corporate funds to the Republican National Committee; the money was conveyed by Jim Ellis, a top political aide of DeLay. A few weeks later, the RNC’s state election committee sent the same …

SD Update: Diedrich Ducks Dick’s Dinner

Ok, this came out on Friday, but Larry Diedrich, the GOP nominee in the SD Special Election is already high-tailing it away from Bush/Cheney. The Veep is coming to raise money for John Thune on the 8th, but Larry Is avoiding it like the plague. He does, however, expect that the Administration will be helping “in other ways.” (read: “cash”) I’m no expert, but it may have something to do with his sub-50% approval rating (and 33% unfavorable) in …

Guest Post - Jesse Lee: That Darned Liberal Media Filter

Ah, the sheer utility of the blog. Many will be surprised to hear this, but Democrats quite regularly compile blistering reports calling out the Republicans on their worst excesses, taking the time to prove their point beyond the shadow of a doubt.  These are released to the media and ultimately ignored virtually without fail.  Now we too are able to bypass the infamous liberal media filter” and provide our fellow bloggers with such information directly. Here is Steny Hoyer’s …

Hastert Stumping for South Dakota

In case you thought the GOP were going to easy on us in the South Daktoa Special Election, National Journal’s Congress Daily (paid registration required) is reporting in this morning’s edition: A week after Republicans suffered a special election defeat in Kentucky, House Speaker Hastert sought Wednesday to redirect Republican energy toward its next special election challenge in South Dakota.     During a weekly House Republican Conference meeting, Hastert told members that it is important to back former …

GOP Speaker Refuses to Extend 911 Commission

Reason #45667 to elect more Democrats to Congress: The Seattle Times is reporting that GOP Speaker Dennis Hastert refuses to bring up legislation to extend the 911 investigation. “The commission says it needs the extra 60 days to complete hundreds of interviews and review millions of documents. Despite initial objections, President Bush backed the panel’s request earlier this month. Democratic congressional aides said Bush halfheartedly supported the extension and put little pressure on Hastert to back down. Republican commission …

Tom Delay Fundraising Scandal Update

The Austin-American Statesman is reporting that Tom DeLay aide John Colyandro sent a blank check to the RNC as part of their coporate money laundering. John Colyandro, executive director of DeLay’s Texans for a Republican Majority, said in a deposition that he had the blank check sent because Ellis had a meeting with Republican National Committee officials scheduled the next day. It has been known for almost a year that Texans for a Republican Majority gave $190,000 in corporate …

Update: NY 1

In case you didn’t catch it, an NRCC Favorite, Brookhaven Town Supervisor John Jay LaValle, declined to run against incumbent Democrat Tim Bishop. That leaves Bishop only one GOP opponent, Bill Manger, who Supervisor LaValle has called “... nobody, really”.

New URL for The Stakeholder

I have moved The Stakeholder from its unwieldy http://65.108.109.16/mt to blog.dccc.org. Should be easy enough to remember, please update your bookmarks, blogrolls, etc. If you have been trying to use our RSS feed, the new URL should work better in your software. Thanks for bearing with us - there should be some more technical modifications in the coming weeks. Feel free to suggest any technical problems/suggestions in the comments here. update: I have also edited the title.

Guest Post: Jesse Lee at Chandler’s Swearing In

Ben Chandler Takes His Seat at the Table As the DCCC watched the astonishing election results roll in from Kentucky-6 on February 17th, an obvious question presented itself: If we can do this in the heart of Kentucky, why can’t we do everywhere? As Democrats gathered in jubilation tonight, awaiting the swearing in of our newest member, we had a chance to pose this question to the man himself. That’s absolutely right,” said Chandler.  We took a Republican district, …

Polisphere and the Blogosphere

Kuff and Atrios have great posts about how the parties need to do more to build the blogosphere. Point well taken. In the buildup to launching our modest blog, we in Online Operations did have to fight uphill. Most of our staff had never seen one, but when we showed them a few they were pretty interested, and I have even caught a few reading them on their own now. We have made some modest shout outs in some …

Morning Congressional News

While we could never duplicate the Hamster’s Headlines, There are a couple stories that we found interesting this morning… First, in a Texas Update, it appears that Tom Delay may have helped launder corporate money and put it into the campaigns of some Texas Republicans. Off the Kuff has backstory (from yesterday). Today the Miami Herald is running an update from the Houston Chronicle on the Grand Jury investigation. Second, KBR (subsidiary of Cheney’s company Halliburton) is now the …

All eyes on SD

Kos points to the Sioux Falls Argus Leader and NRCC spokesperson Bo Harmon who says that ”[South Dakota] is at the top of our priority list, and that means strong involvement from the committee to let voters know who Larry Diedrich is,” he said. That also means access to Republican dignitaries at the national level who could campaign at Diedrich’s side, he said. We are going to need every hand on deck for this one. But, if you needed …
