MI-09: Poll Shows Peters with 4 Point Lead Over Knollenberg
DCCC Press:
A Grove Insight poll conducted August 17-19 of 400 likely voters with a 4.9 percent margin of error shows that Gary Peters leads Congressman Joe Knollenberg 41-37 percent in an initial head-to-head matchup. Eight percent voted for Jack Kevorkian and 14 percent were undecided. After voters are informed with each candidates' message and bio, Gary Peters comes out ahead 50 percent -35 percent, with six percent going for Kevorkian and with nine percent undecided.
At the presidential level, Illinois Senator Barack Obama led in the district 52 percent -35 percent over Senator John McCain with only 3 percent undecided. Only 25 percent of the district approves of Joe Knollenberg's job performance, while President Bush's approval rating stands at 18 percent.
"As a fifth generation Oakland County native and accomplished businessman, Gary Peters is a strong, principled leader who will take action to create good-paying jobs, restore fiscal discipline and get Michigan's economy back on track," said DCCC Midwest Regional Press Secretary Ryan Rudominer. "Congressman Knollenberg will pay a heavy price at the polls this November for blindly following President Bush's failed economic agenda that got us into our current economic crisis that has squeezed families with soaring energy and health care costs, and skyrocketing unemployment."

The payday loan industry is in danger because there are politicians who wish to wipe out the entire industry. But that is not what is best for the people. For instance, in Georgia, the bankruptcy filings, bounced checks and foreclosures all skyrocketed after the cash advance product was done away with. With no disregard for these negative statistics, following the closure of payday loans in these states, several other governors continue to try and follow suit. Top national politicians are now stepping out in hopes of wiping the industry completely off the map. Should such politicians succeed, there is a big possibility that there will be increased unemployment rates, more debt, more foreclosures and an even more damaged economy.

The third and last U.S. Presidential Debate took place in Hempstead, New York on October 14, 2008. Senator Barack Obama of Illinois took off running with an eight-point lead, according to an average of national polls as collected by CNN. Sen. John McCain of Arizona took advantage of Obama’s unruffled carriage and laid the younger candidate’s policies, judgment and qualities of character out on the table. McCain quickly pointed out that he was “not President Bush” as soon as Obama responded with a more critical stance regarding the economic policies of the past eight years. McCain stated that he would enact an “across the board spending freeze,” chop off some programs and get rid of the remaining once the dust settled. On the other hand, Obama presented a more conservative stance about the issue. He would “go through the federal budget page by page, line by line” in order to close programs that aren’t working as they should be. Both candidates declare to bring a resolution to America and its decreasing economy. However, will it leave consumers with the ability to choose where or when to have access to payday loans? That remains unclear. Just because it is said that Americans are living in “the land of the free” doesn’t mean that interest groups (i.e. banks and credit unions) are of the same mind to have the freedom to choose.
