Dede Scozzafava: You Pay Higher Taxes While I Don't Pay My Own Taxes
Assemblywoman Scozzafava Voted to Raise, Extend Taxes 190 Times, Family Business Has Close to $200,000 in Outstanding Tax Liens
While she continues to duck, dodge, and doublespeak when it comes to her family's business and their own outstanding tax liens, a look at her record shows that Albany politician Dede Scozzafava voted to raise or extend taxes on New Yorkers over 190 times. From increases on sales taxes to wireless surcharges, Assemblywoman Scozzafava not only passed tax hike after tax hike along to New Yorkers, but clearly holds herself to another standard when it comes to paying her own taxes.
Two months ago it was reported that Dede Scozzafava's family business has close to $200,000 in unpaid state and federal tax liens. Since then, the Assemblywoman has offered conflicting statements about her involvement in the company; she even tried to shamelessly claim to be a "passive investor" even though she owns over $1 million in preferred stock in the company in question.
"The fact that Assemblywoman Scozzafava has no problem hiking taxes on New Yorkers while she refuses to pay outstanding liens on her own family's business is downright shameful," said Shripal Shah, Northeast Regional Press Secretary for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. "Times are tough; Upstate New Yorkers simply can't afford to send Assemblywoman Scozzafava and her ‘higher taxes for you, no taxes for me' ways to Washington."

Despite trying to claim to be a "passive investor" in the company, Scozzafava's financial disclosure form shows she owns over $1 million in preferred stock that gives her voting rights in the company. [PolitickerNY.com, 9/2/09]
