Speaker Pelosi: United for Change
Speaker Nancy Pelosi sent the following message to DCCC supporters:
Dear Friend,
Let there be no doubt how united for change Democrats are this year. Thanks to you, we shattered our second quarter fundraising goal by raising an astounding $5 million in matching grassroots donations.
On behalf of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, I can't thank you enough for generously contributing to our United for Change campaign. You proved once again that the Republicans' special interests are no match for the combined strength of tens of thousands of grassroots Democrats who are committed to fighting for change.
Next month, I will have the honor of serving as Chair of our history-making Democratic National Convention in Denver, where we will officially make Senator Barack Obama our nominee for President. I'm pleased to announce that Stacy Fredricksen from Menlo Park, CA and Scott Sands from Seattle, WA have won our 100 Days Till Denver Convention Contest and will join us for our convention.
Your support is going to work right away. Thanks to you, we were able to run radio ads against some of the President's strongest Republican allies in Congress. Our ads, which ran during the July 4th district work period, featured a George Bush impersonator, "thanking" Republicans in the "Grand Oil Party" for helping to protect the status quo of high gas prices and record profits for Big Oil companies.
Check out a sample of the July 4th ad campaign that you helped make happen.
Thank you again for putting our strongest candidates for change in a great position as they prepare for the final stretch of their campaigns.
As special thanks for helping us meet our goal, please check out our latest edition of the House Insider, for insider information on some of our most crucial races nationwide.
With your continued support, we will celebrate Barack Obama's victory in November and a larger Democratic Majority in Congress next year to create the profound and lasting change that our country needs.
Onward to a great Democratic victory!
Nancy Pelosi
Speaker of the House

There are two major issues I’m concerned with, getting the country back from the Neo-Cons and having an aggressive Democratic Party that works towards that end. They say that propriety is more about the perception of propriety than anything else and, as far as I’m concerned, my perception of Nancy Pelosi is that she’s a disaster… an old school back room hack who seems to have an all give, no take relationship with the White House. The Democrats need to clean house and do something about this millstone and her near obsessive crusade to take ALL forms of Republican accountability “off the table”.
After repeated efforts to sneak it through, the Democrats we elected to protect the Constitution have succeeded in destroying the 4th amendment with FISA, the Democrats elected to stop the war have obediently passed every authorization on the president’s wish list and more, the candidate who promised “change” is keeping that promise by weakening all of the positions that attracted me in the first place. If I want perpetual war, trashing the Constitution, lies, and corruption, the Republicans are still better at it, though I see the Democrats are struggling mightily to catch up.
I just got this in an email. Great timing - Pelosi and Reid lead the Democrats caving in on FISA and Nancy immediately sends out a self-congratulatory email looking for more money.
And this isn’t the first time this has happened.
What the hell is wrong with you people?
dave, you said it all.
Greetings, I am agnostic. Senator Obama needs to understand that my Bible is the United States Constitution and I have thirteen commandments, not ten. They are known as “The Bill of Rights” and I firmly believe in and will defend all thirteen including the first, second, and fourth amendments. I own and carry a handgun. I will not side with the left on this issue any more than I will side with Bush on the Patriot Act. I want it abolished! On some issues, there is just no room for compromise.
Thank You!
Everyone is right on target. I’m so disappointed. We all worked so hard to get the majority in the last election and what did we really get? A bunch of liars who have done next to nothing. FYI: The citizens voted you in because you promised change. Instead, we get more of the same. Don’t get me wrong, I’m voting for Obama. Voting for McCain is just not an option. He’s off his rocker. Let me just say that, while I’m hopeful that Obama will deliver, I’m going into this with my eyes wide open. I don’t expect anything. That way, I won’t again be crushed by the disrespectful attitude all politicians have of ignoring what the voters want/expect after we put so much into getting them elected with the belief that they are going to listen.
You are absolutely right Heather. I am SO not voting for John McCain. However; I worry about this “Let’s cooperate with the Republicans” attitude of Obama’s. On some issues, I will not budge one inch to either side. Maybe it is time for an independent. Unfortunately, there’s no one running who I consider to be a viable option. Sure wish Hillary had won the nomination. At least she has a spine.
No money from me after this cave in (not even a cave in—they pushed this through with enthusiasm and vigor)—to the establishment democrats. I’m going to spend my energy and money getting real Democrats into office.
I’m with you, Mike. This two-party system just isn’t working.
I hope he won’t mind my quoting him, but one of the people on Obama’s blog (the group trying to stop his assent to the FISA sellout) submitted the following:
When you vote for the lesser of two evils:
- You only get more evil. Because that’s how we
lose our rights, one by one.
- And then the two evils become identical.
- Then who do you choose??
I am in agreement with Annette. Please keep me posted on who are the Real Democrats and who are the Republicrats. I will not support the latter. I think if everyone follows this simple rule, they will change their tune mighty quick. Just STOP donating money to any Democrat who supports legislation which deviates from the Constitution and vote them out at the very next opportunity.
BTW, instead of just saying “no more money from me,” why not donate the money you might have given to the Dems instead to an organization like the ACLU or EFF? Then contact the DCCC, the Obama campaign, etc. with the amount you gave and note that it’s money that is not going to THEM and WHY they’re not getting the money.
I am highly upset with Nancey Pelosi for her SEXIST behavior and allowing it to continue. I am also planning not to waste my vote just because of the DNC --- IT IS TIME FOR A CHANGE: Brazel, Obama, Pelosi, and the TWO PARTY BS. I will continue to help Hillary pay down her debt.
PEACE OUT
See you all in Denver
Hillary 08
I just today received an email from Nancy Pelosi with the subject United for Change. That was right after I learned that the Democrats caved in on the FISA bill. What the?? Half the Dims voted with the Repugs. How does that translate into “united?” I’ve had it. This was a complete sell-out. I noticed too that Obama and Clinton didn’t vote today. How convenient.
I am with you Theresa.I voted for Hillary on Super Tuesday. I am a 49 year old white male who is a devout liberal except for my right to defend myself and my family by any means necessary. I would have to side with Jeb Bush on this issue.
Please elaborate on why you call Pelosi Sexist. I don’t understand. She has certainly done a lot of things that I am not at all happy with; but Sexist? I don’t get it. She’s a woman.
Don’t get me wrong folks! Hillary supporter though I am, I will vote Democratic in the general election. The last thing this country needs is a third Bush term. Agreed? Barrack Obama may not be the best we could could have had but I fear the alternative a whole lot more.
Goodbye Democracy; Hello Dictatorship!!! In my opinion, we had better do something while we still can.
Let’s get this FISA thing right.
NYTimes.com linked to U.S. Senate:
they recorded a NAY for Hillary; she did vote!
Obama sold us out with Nancy Pelosi, Hoyer, and the rest of the turncoats: he voted YEA.
McCain was a coward (what a surprise after he backed off every “maverick” thing he did once he started running) and DIDN’T VOTE.
So now we can vote for “Libertarian” hypocrite Bob Barr, Bush clone McCain, or “change agent” (now we see what kind of change we’re getting) Obama. What a choice!
Thanks for the update on FISA Jim. I knew I was right to support Hillary for President. Too bad the pundits didn’t agree. If I had the power, I would fire every last one of them for the hatchet job they did on her. I promise I won’t forget it!
One more thing I forgot: while I believe that the writer who accused Harry Reid of leading the charge on the FISA sellout, the final tally I saw shows a NAY vote for him. Did he get some belated integrity, or just get scared?
Maybe Harry read our comments just before he voted. HEE-HEE!
The real issue with Pelosi and Reid is that they have resided over the total failure of (the Democratically held) Congress to accomplish anything noteworthy. Rather than utilize the their majority to demonstrate to the American public that they could move America forward with real ideas and real policy (can anyone say coherent energy policy?), they have led the Democrats in disarray while focusing on pointless posturing and political payback to the worst President in our history in the twilight of his disastrous tenure. As a result, they have helped earn Congress a lower approval rating than W. Talk about abject failures! I can only hope the American public doesn’t realize their incompetence and complete failure of leadership before the election in November. I also hope, if the Democrats can actually not blow this election, that they develop the vision that will help keep them in power and move America toward energy independence, fiscal responsibility, actual accountability, and an end to wasteful earmarks and business as usual politics. I guess I can dream.
I agree wholeheartedly with Steven however, one thing we all need to remember is the Democrats do not have a substantial majority in the Senate; where most of the “Move America Forward” legislation gets tied up by the Republicans with the help of traitors like Joe Lieberputz. He is the first one we should throw out on his duff first chance we get!! Listen Up Connecticut!!
They may not have enough to pass, but they have enough to NOT pass. The recent damage has been on stuff they simply needed to filibuster, or vote “NO” on, or simply prevent from coming to the floor.
The FISA sellout wasn’t something they just got outvoted on: as another writer mentioned, the Democratic leaders repeatedly brought it up for re-votes, and - until Reid’s last-minute attack of conscience, or whatever it was - supported it, in some cases enthusiastically.
They could simply have said, “The president clearly doesn’t need this, or he wouldn’t have vetoed it” and moved on to something else. Instead, they apparently kept hoping if they waited awhile and sent it through again, we might not notice. Plus, they do have a fairly substantial majority in the House, where the thing passed easily, with plenty to spare, at least this last time.
I would point out to those who will still vote for Obama, that he is not nominated yet. How about a rally to get Hillary in? I won’t vote for him, or McCain. Who else is there?
Could answer a question for me, I’m a great believer and support of the Democratic Party and Obama. It’s going around in Utah that Obama is the author of a bill to double the capital gains tax ( is this true or not )
Elaine, I share your frustration, but that would be guaranteed to sink what little (in my opinion) chance the Dems have of actually winning (they’re already working hard to blow it on things like FISA) and might even take down some “real” Democrats.
William: Utah is a solidly Republican (dare I say nearly Fascist?) state. The fact that something’s “going around” there almost in itself guarantees its untruth, given the level of [dis]honesty we see in Republicans. I have no facts other than these, but since the Republicans have all but eliminated the tax, doubling it probably wouldn’t amount to much for those affected, anyway.
Elaine, That is a Great idea! Unfortunately; it would never work. Who can be for you when the pundits are against you. As much as I Love guys like Keith Olbermann and Wolf Blitzer, I am furious at them for their hatchet job on Hillary.
Jim, I have a very valid argument to your point about this. I firmly believe Hillary would do a much better job of standing up to the Republican attack machine. Also; Hillary Clinton has already proven herself to be a peoples champion and especially; a womens champion. You have something against that?
I agree with most everything you say except that it took Democratic congresspeople to allow this to happen. My congress person is Gabrielle Giffords, a freshman Dem., from a conservative district. I’ve told her what I think of this vote; I’m very upset about her tossing the 4th Amendment under the bus.
I have 2 Republican Senators and a Democratic Representative who is a religious conservative Democrat. Don’t feel like you’re alone. In my view, it is these religious ideologues that are ruining everything. We need to elect more open minded people if we are to keep our liberties. Of course; if we don’t like them, we can always go back to 1850 Salemn Mass. Anyone up to join THAT movement?
As Ed points out, it’s really the people in the House who made FISA happen, and there’s a clear Democratic majority there.
Mike, if you haven’t already read it, you might enjoy Sam Harris’s Letter to a Christian Nation. If you’re a hopeless heathen like I am, The God Delusion or God is Not Great might be the ticket.
I currently have a conservative (with religious underpinnings) idealogue for representative - I rarely even bother to write him - who unfortunately is retiring. I say unfortunately because the lady who very nearly beat him last time is running again. But his replacement in this strongly Republican district is at least not a nut case (yet). Fortunately, both our senators voted against the FISA bill, though I don’t know if they voted to support the filibuster.
Jim, You are missing the whole point. The Dems are Scared To Death to be portrayed as being weak on National Security by the Right Wing attack machine again as they were in the past. Somehow, we need to make them realize that 70% of the nation is NOT with President bush on this. Any suggestions as to how we can do that?
I understand the right-wing attack machine, and the Dems are right to be scared of it: IT WORKS! I’m not an optimist about this, and I think that even if you’re right about the 70%, the attack machine is going to change many of them, no matter what the Dems do. My point is that the Republicans know what they want, and do it, consequences be damned. And they haven’t done badly at all pursuing that; in fact, they have essentially conducted a revolution which it would take Dem Congresses and presidents decades to undo, assuming Dems could maintain control that long.
Our Dem “representatives,” on the other hand, keep going for “bipartisanship” and compromise. To the Republicans, compromise means “you give me everything I want, and I’ll give you nothing except maybe (if you’re good) some sort of window dressing to hide behind.” FISA is only the latest of such “compromises.” The Dems never learn (an influx of cash from the same lobbyists bribing the Republicans certainly helps “grease the wheels” of the betrayal, if I can mix metaphors).
The Dems ARE WEAK, but not in the way they fear to be shown. When they gain control, but proceed at a leisurely pace (where they proceed at all) as if they have forever; Clinton obediently appointed ancient people to the Supreme Court, while both Bushes appointed young neo-Nazis who will be with us for decades to come. This is not to slight justice Ginsberg, who I admire, but when she retires, you can bet President McCain will have some 40-year old right-wing hack to replace her, and even if the Dems control the Senate, the nomination will speed through with minimal unpleasantness.
To your earlier point: I like Hillary, but I really think Obama was right: if she won, things just wouldn’t change that much. Bill was very conservative; his presidency was more that of a moderate Republican (before they became extinct) than a real “liberal,” even though he was constantly accused of being one.
I agree with you 100%; Especially on that last comment about Bill Clinton constantly being portrayed as a screaming Liberal when, in reality, he was not that at all. These are the kinds of things I hope to try to change but first, We must give every Democrat in the country a backbone. This is easier said than done but It MUST be done if we are to survive because you are right; The Repubs win even when they’re in the minority because they are not one bit afraid to take a stand and if the consequences are bad, they simply change the story to make them appear good. While most of the American people are smart enough to see through this charade, they have no where to turn because the Democrats refuse to stand in opposition. So my question to you is; What can you and I do to help change things? Please; give me any suggestions you have. I don’t have any money but I am one Democrat who knows where I stand on issues and is not one bit afraid to fight for the things I believe in.
Sorry Mike; I’m old, angry, and disgusted, and I just don’t see it changing. You say the American people are smart, but I have to disagree. This goes back at least to 1968, when some one asked who he was voting for replied “Johnson, if he runs; otherwise, I’m voting for Wallace.” I see no hope for a nation where one week the president’s approval rating goes up, even though he’s been just as arrogantly dishonest and incompetent then as he was the previous week when it was low. I realize our polls are often flawed or even dishonest, but it’s hard for me to understand how any nation composed of even moderately intelligent and informed people could vote nearly 50% for some one so obviously lazy, ignorant, dishonest, and proud of all three in 2000, and - even more incredibly - in 2004. I happen to think the Repubs stole the election in 2000, and I understand that there is strong evidence they did the same in 2004 (and why not? no one really protested too much the first time), but the fact that it was even close enough for there to be a chance to steal it, that there was any doubt at all who would win from the moment the first vote was cast, says everything I need to know about the much-touted “wisdom of the American people” pundits are always blathering about. On another topic on this blog, writers objected to the use of the word “dirtbags” to describe some Republican fat-cat donors because they felt the crude language would turn off “independents and swing voters.” And - much as I hate to admit it - they’re absolutely right. Americans in overwhelming numbers seem unoffended by lies, torture, mass murder, destruction of the constitution, sale or giveaway of the nation to corporate malefactors, at least compared to how they feel if some one says a “bad” word. And, despite the childish and vicious - not to mention dishonest - name-calling campaigns by Repubs over the last few years, these “swing voters” obviously haven’t been offended enough to swing from the Repubs to the Dems.
In a society of ignorant people with simplistic world views, those who admit that something other than black and white, pure good and pure evil exists - something that true liberals are wont to do - suffer a HUGE, HUGE disadvantage from the get-go. Those who can reduce an incredibly complex issue to a catchy, three-word slogan will almost always humiliate the “pointy-head” who tries to explain complexity to an unappreciative and largely anti-intellectual audience, and - even if the live audience listens - the six o’clock news will cover it as they did Bill Clinton’s confrontation with Chris Wallace: not that a politician responded with indignant, but reasonable arguments to a transparently fabricated charge of responsibility for 9/11, and this is what he said, and this part is accurate, this is a stretch (and this is why). No, the coverage said “Clinton lost his cool,” “Clinton went ballistic,” with barely a word about what he said, or even why he was angry.
Sorry, but I don’t know how to turn it around. I feel like some one standing on the railroad tracks trying to stop the 100-mile per hour bullet train by physical force. I had hope that electing Dems to Congress would slow it at least, and that Obama might even be able to change it, though - based on the above - I never thought either he or Hillary had much chance of winning (not to mention certain other characteristics each has which won’t usually be mentioned to pollsters, but strongly influence a lot of people’s votes), but I feel Obama has surrendered before the election has even gotten started, and the Dems in Congress have been an embarrassment.
Well Jim; I am kind of old myself. I remember 1968 though vaguely; I was 10. But I remember the 70’s and the firestorm over the war in Vietnam (another place we had no business being) and I also remember how that war ended under a Republican president yet now it is the Democrats who get blamed for it time and time again.
The facts happen to support our theory about George W. Bush stealing the election. Have you watched Michael Moore’s film Fahrenheit 911? This is extremely disturbing but once again, it comes down to a lack of Spine. Al Gore could have, should have, fought that election with every ounce of strength and through every Avenue he had available to him. I would have!! But he simply gave in. And herein lies the difference. All we have to do is find more Democrats like you and me and try to get them elected. Problem is; I just don’t know where to look. I was hoping you could give me some ideas; and maybe a little help?
Have you seen the news yet today. The price of oil has dropped dramatically and there have been several positive things that Pelosi and the Dems in the House are attempting to put forth, including; a veto of some kind. I didn’t catch it all. Turn on the news. Let’s not give up on them just yet. Maybe Pelosi actually reads these comments of ours.
