Breaking: MI- 11 Fallout Spells More Trouble for Washington Republicans
After Republicans got stuck with extreme Ron Paul Tea Party darling, Santa impersonator and 9-11 truther movie star Kerry Bentivolio as their candidate Tuesday night, today’s fraud charges mean more trouble for Republicans in Michigan’s 11th Congressional District. The Detroit Free Press reports that four of Congressman McCotter’s staffers were charged this morning for forging petitions and signatures in a fraud scandal that threw McCotter off the ballot and spurred his abrupt retirement.
According to the Michigan State Attorney’s office, McCotter’s staff were “dysfunctional congressional staff that had completely lost its moral compass” and were “indifferent to the requirements of the law.”
The Free Press also noted today that “much has changed” in the seat that should have been an “easy win” for McCotter. As Republicans continue to scramble and cope with the fallout from McCotter’s retirement and this week’s primary, the toll is an estimated $650,000 to taxpayers for the two elections in November.
“First Michigan Republicans nominated ‘Krazy Kerry,’ a candidate so out of touch with middle class families his own Party conspired against him because they know he can’t effectively solve the kitchen table issues that folks care about. Now, saddled with this nominiee, Michigan Republicans will have to defend an ethics scandal that’s costing taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars because Party operatives ‘lost their moral compass,’” said Haley Morris of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
