Congressman Allen West: WAY Too Extreme for Florida Families and Seniors

Congressman Allen West faces the impossible task of defending his extreme vote to end Medicare and force seniors to pay more for health care while protecting tax breaks for millionaires, Big Oil, and corporations shipping jobs overseas and no amount of money can revamp his extremist record. Congressman West even faced opposition from other Republicans in his primary who labeled him as “shameful” and “ultra-radical, right wing.”

Floridians are all too familiar with Congressman West’s extreme divisive rhetoric and record in Congress that has left behind Florida seniors and middle class families.

Congressman West is Too Extreme for Florida Seniors. Congressman West voted to end Medicare and raise health care costs by $6,400 for Florida seniors while giving people earning at least $1 million a year a $265,000 tax cut. Just recently, Congressman West blasted Social Security benefits as “a form of modern, 21st-century slavery” even though nearly four million Floridians depend on Social Security.

Congressman West Voted for Budgets With the Wrong Priorities for Seniors. House Republicans voted for two budgets authored by Congressman Paul Ryan. Together, these budgets that would end Medicare’s guaranteed benefit while providing people earning more than $1 million a year with an average tax cut of $265,000. Additionally, the Congressional Budget Office estimated it will increase health care costs by an extra $6,359 by 2022 for future Medicare beneficiaries. [H Con. West Compared Social Security to Slavery.  "Since June of 2009 or so, we have seen 2.4 million private sector jobs created, but we've had 3.1 million people going on Social Security disability," said West. "So once again, we are creating a sense of economic dependence, which to me, is a form of modern 21st century slavery." [Sun-Sentinel, 7/09/02]

Congressman West is Too Extreme for Florida Middle Class Families. Congressman Allen West has protected tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans and big corporations, while opposing a $1,000 tax cut for 160 million middle income taxpayers.  Congressman Allen West even supports eliminating the Department of Education which would cost Florida $11 billion in education funding, shifting those costs to state and local governments.

Congressman West Voted Against Extending Payroll Tax Cut Calling The $1,000 Tax Cut a “Short Term Bon-Bon.” In 2012, Allen West voted against a bipartisan compromise extending a payroll tax cut for 160 million working Americans through the remainder of the year and called the payroll tax a “short term bon-bon.” [Fox News, uploaded 9/9/11; HR 3630, Vote #72, 2/17/12]

Congressman West Supported Eliminating the Department of Education. According to the Miami Herald, Allen West “has called for the end of the U.S. Department of Education – a department he says has grown too much.”  [Miami Herald, 7/16/10; Department of Education, 4/3/12]

Congressman West Is “Divisive” and “Ineffective.” Both locals papers have refused to endorse Congressman West calling him “ineffective,” “polarizing,” and “divisive.”

West Tied To The Infamous Motorcycle Gang, The Outlaws, Which Denigrates Women.  In 2010, NBC reported that controversy was erupting over West’s “dealings with the Florida biking community- especially a motorcycle club called the Outlaws.” In 2011, the Orlando Sentinel reported that West has ties to the “misogynistic biker magazine, which then-candidate West submitted his bylined columns to for publication.” [The Orlando Sentinel, 7/21/11; NBC, 10/15/10]

Congressman West Called Colleague “Vile” and “Despicable.”  In July 2011, West sent an email to Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz calling her “the most vile, unprofessional and despicable member of the U.S. House of Representatives.”  He went on to write that “You have proven repeatedly that you are not a Lady, therefore, shall not be afforded due respect from me!”  [Palm Beach Post, 7/20/11]

Called the Democratic Party a “21st Century Plantation.” “You have this 21st century plantation that has been out there where the Democrat party has forever taken the black vote for granted. And you have established certain black leaders who are nothing more than overseers over the plantation.” [Fox News, uploaded 8/17/11]

West: Goebbels would be proud of Democrats. Congressman Allen West said, “If Joseph Goebbels was around, he’d be very proud of the Democrat Party, because they have an incredible propaganda machine.” This is just the latest incendiary comment from West, who has a disgusting history of using Nazi rhetoric to slander his opponents.” [Politico, 12/15/11]
