DCCC Launches Automated Phone Calls in 35 Districts on Fiscal Cliff

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) continued the GOPHostageTakers.com campaign today pushing House Republicans to force a vote that extends middle class tax cuts. The DCCC launched automated phone calls demanding 35 vulnerable House Republicans sign a discharge petition that brings the Senate-passed middle class tax cuts to the House floor for a vote. House Republicans are holding middle class tax cuts hostage and threatening to send the economy over the fiscal cliff in order to get more budget-busting tax breaks for millionaires.

Over 400,000 people have signed at www.GOPHostageTakers.com demanding a vote and 178 Members of Congress have signed the discharge petition toward the 218 signatures needed to force the vote.  Even Republican Congressman Tom Cole said this weekend that the middle class tax cuts would pass the House if a vote were allowed.

“Tea Party House Republicans can’t defend holding the middle class hostage and threatening a $2,200 tax increase in order to get more budget-busting tax cuts for millionaires,” said DCCC Chairman Steve Israel. “Republican leaders are driving our economy over the fiscal cliff but their Members have a chance to put on the brakes by forcing this vote to protect the middle class and our economic recovery. Tea Party House Republicans were elected pledging to protect America's middle class, not on a pledge to Grover Norquist, and its time they started acting like it. “

Last week the DCCC launched a new website www.GOPHostageTakers.com with an online petition demanding targeted House Republicans allow a vote on extending middle class tax cuts.

The text of the script for the automated phone call targeting Congressman Tom Reed follows:

Hi this is Julie calling on behalf of the DCCC. Did you know Congressman Tom Reed could make sure Congress votes to extend tax cuts for the middle class and avoids the fiscal cliff, but he refuses. If Congressman Reed doesn’t act, the average middle class family will be stuck with a crushing $2,200 tax hike.

Why? Because Congressman Reed is holding the middle class hostage to get more reckless, budget-busting tax cuts for millionaires. It’s wrong.

It’s critical you make your voice heard. Demand that Congressman Reed get a vote to extend tax cuts for the middle class immediately, not hold the middle class hostage to get more tax cuts for millionaires.
