DCCC Radio Ads Expose 10 Republican Congressmen Putting Their Own Health Care Ahead of Constituents
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is launching radio ads against 10 House Republicans who voted to give themselves taxpayer-funded health insurance for life – even as they engineered a government shutdown so they could take away Americans’ benefits under the Affordable Care Act. Among many other grim findings for House Republicans, a newly released poll from the Washington Post showed 74 percent of Americans disapprove of the way Republicans are handling negotiations.
The radio ads will play against the following Republican incumbents:
- Congressman Dan Benishek (MI-01)
- Congressman Rodney Davis (IL-13)
- Congressman Mike Coffman (CO-06)
- Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick (PA-08)
- Congressman Michael Grimm (NY-11)
- Congressman Gary Miller (CA-31)
- Congressman Tom Reed (NY-23)
- Congressman Scott Rigell (VA-02)
- Congressman Steve Southerland (FL-02)
- Congressman David Valadao (CA-21)
“Americans simply can’t believe that these House Republicans would engineer a government shutdown so they could take away health care benefits – even when they voted to give themselves taxpayer-funded health care for life,” said Emily Bittner of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “In these 10 districts, and so many others, this reckless and irresponsible shutdown is hurting middle class families who play by the rules – obviously, the only people who House Republicans aren’t willing to hurt are themselves.”
Republicans have repeatedly demanded repeal of the Affordable Care Act, which includes a provision that removes Members of Congress from the Federal Employee Health Benefits plan and requires they receive the same health care as their constituents. Republicans’ repeal of the Affordable Care Act would mean more benefits provided to Members of Congress.
An example of the script of “Door” playing in Congressman Mike Coffman’s district is below.
(Sfx: Doorbell rings).
(Male VO): Hello, Congressman Coffman here, just in from Washington.
(Female VO): Uh. Hi. Aren’t you supposed to be doing something about that shut down?
(Male VO): I’m here to talk about what I’m doing these days. First, I’m working hard to take away your new health care benefits.
(Female VO): What? Congressman Coffman !?!
(Male VO): That’s right. We’ll put the insurance companies back in charge of your health care.
(Female VO): You’ve got to be kidding me.
(Male VO): Oh we’re dead serious -- so serious that we shut down the government over it.
(Female VO): Congressman Coffman -- that’s just irresponsible. And, well… reckless. Oh, and what happens to your health care?
(Male VO): Oh, don’t worry about me. Voted myself taxpayer-funded healthcare for life! So I’m taken care of, but thanks for your concern.
