DCCC Statement on Tea Party Defeat of Congressman Cliff Stearns in Republican Primary

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee released the following statement after Congressman Cliff Stearns was defeated by a Tea Party opponent in his Republican primary. Newly released Gallup polling shows this Republican Congress getting the lowest approval rating in its history – 10 percent approval.

"This is just the latest victim of the Tea Party takeover of the Republican party where even the most conservative members aren't right-wing enough," said Jesse Ferguson of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. 'Republicans are reeling across the nation from having the end of Medicare as a ticket mate and now another Republican falling to the Tea Party shows how deep the trouble is for Republican incumbents in Florida who can’t even win their own primaries. The same Tea Party primary voters have left Republicans with unelectable extremists running all across the country who can't appeal to the middle and alienate independents."
