Does Buerkle Agree with Donor and Tea Party Rep. Allen West?
Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle (NY-24) has long been a favorite of Tea Party extremists for her unwillingness to temper her radical beliefs that are way out of step with the moderate district she represents. Last night, Congresswoman Buerkle cemented her Tea Party ties by welcoming Tea Party icon Congressman Allen West to the district to headline a fundraiser for her. Congressman West has made a career of offending people with his hateful rhetoric. Now that Congresswoman Buerkle has brought West to the district, does that mean she supports him and his outrageous positions?
“Does Congresswoman Buerkle agree with Allen West that Social Security disability insurance is a form of ‘modern, 21st-century slavery’?” said Josh Schwerin, Northeast Press Secretary at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “Perhaps just as important, as someone representing a district that voted for President Obama with 57 percent, does Congresswoman Buerkle agree that Obama supporters are ‘a threat to the gene pool’? If Congresswoman Buerkle is funding her campaign on this hurtful and offensive rhetoric, the least she can do is explain to her constituents why she is promoting this kind of extremism.”
Background
West Called Obama Supporters a Threat to the Gene Pool. “I must confess, when I see anyone with an Obama 2012 bumper sticker, I recognize them as a threat to the gene pool.” [Palm Beach Post, 7/19/11]
West Compared Social Security to Slavery. "Since June of 2009 or so, we have seen 2.4 million private sector jobs created, but we've had 3.1 million people going on Social Security disability," said West. "So once again, we are creating a sense of economic dependence, which to me, is a form of modern 21st century slavery." [Sun-Sentinel, 7/9/02]
