Gephardt at the Opening

It really was an inspiring opening in a lot of ways, but none more so than the presence of Democratic stalwart Dick Gephardt.  He had the look in his eye of a man who had held the party firm for decades, and was now seeing the fruits of his labor.  I asked him what was on his mind, and he said,

“This is the best day for the Democratic Party in my memory.  And that’s a long time.”

The other theme of the day was provided by his successor, Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi:

“I’m going to give you three numbers: 12, 2, and 1.

12 seats until we take back the House.

2 seats until we take the Senate.

And 1 race to make John Kerry our new President.”

That easy.
