Michigan Republicans’ Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Week
Republicans are still grappling with the fallout from Congressman Thad McCotter’s abrupt retirement, and this week problems continue to mount in a seat that should have been easy to hold.
- Republicans are now stuck with “Krazy Kerry” Bentivolio, the Ron Paul Tea Party darling, Santa impersonator and 9-11 truther movie star as their nominee despite their best efforts to thwart him.
- Michigan Republicans’ write in candidate, N-A-N-C-Y Cassis refuses to endorse Bentivolio, revealing publicly the concerns that local Republicans share about how out of touch Bentivolio is with Michigan middle class families on kitchen table issues central to the election.
- Republicans have to answer for Congressman McCotter staffers who were charged with fraud in a petition scandal that got McCotter kicked off the ballot and prompted his resignation at a whopping $650,000 cost to taxpayers.
- Today, as National Journal notes, Republicans have a choice between “two unappealing options: unite, hold their noses, and get behind nominee Kerry Bentivolio, or cut losses and gear up for 2014. There appears to be no early consensus.”
What will Michigan Republicans and the NRCC do?
