One in Five Bills Passed by the House is to Rename a Post Office?
A CNN report, “Congress: Same Hours, Half the Work,” finds that about 1 in every 5 measures were to rename a U.S. Post Office.
While Americans are looking for work, student loan rates are about to increase, and Republicans focus on deeply cutting Medicare to pay for tax breaks for millionaires, Big Oil, and corporations that ship jobs overseas, House Republicans are prioritizing passing bills to rename Post Offices? No wonder Americans are angry at Congress.
Thomas Mann, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, compares the 2009 Democratic-controlled House to the current Republican-controlled House:
- Then – “The [Democratic] 111th Congress in 2009 ‘was exceedingly productive. It was a time of unified government…If you look at major legislation passed, it ranks with the most productive in modern history.’”
- Now – “The Republican majority in the House, it has been one of the least productive in modern history, not surprisingly.”
