POLITICO: Murphy with the momentum

POLITICO:

Democrats appear to have momentum in the closely-watched New York special election that will be held later this month.

Democrat Scott Murphy has dramatically closed the lead that Republican Jim Tedisco once held in the race for Kirsten Gillibrand's old House seat, according to a new Siena poll.

The poll shows Tedisco only leading Murphy by four points, 45 to 41 percent, with independent voters favoring Murphy by a six-point margin.

That's a sharp change from the last Siena poll two weeks ago when Tedisco held a 12-point lead, 46 to 34 percent.

"Scott Murphy has significantly narrowed the gap against Jim Tedisco, trailing by only four points in a district that has a 15-point Republican enrollment edge," said Steven Greenberg, spokesman for the Siena New York Poll. "Only 13 percent of voters remain undecided - down from 20 percent - and nearly 90 percent of voters say they are absolutely or fairly certain they will not change their minds.

The poll, conducted between March 9-10, surveyed 712 likely voters and has a 3.7 percent margin of error.

The special election will be held on March 31.
