Called Out: David Young (IA-3) Hit with Fines for Late Taxes after Voting to Punish Federal Employees for Doing the Same

In case you missed it – the Omaha World Herald and The Hill both exposed Rep. David Young for racking up penalties for not paying his taxes – awkward for someone who prides himself on being a “taxpayer watchdog.” Even more ironically, Young voted last week to punish federal employees (which he’s been since 1999) who have delinquent taxes. Let’s keep in mind that Young has owned property in DC for over a decade – so we’re pretty sure he should know when the tax bill comes due.

“Rep. Young voted last week to punish federal employees who are late on their taxes, and now we find out that he failed to pay his own – an irony that’s not lost on hardworking Iowans,” said DCCC Communications Director Matt Thornton. “It’s fair to say we’ll be taking his self-proclaimed title of ‘Taxpayer Watchdog’ with a heavy grain of salt.”

The Hill

Rep. David Young (R-Iowa) missed the property tax payment on his D.C. townhouse at the end of last month, incurring a bill of more than $6,000.

Young consequently owed $598 in penalties and $90 in interest when he didn’t pay the $5,980 municipal tax bill for his Logan Circle townhouse in Washington, D.C., by March 31.

Last week, Young voted for a bill that would make federal tax delinquency a fireable offense for federal employees.

Young is one of the top Democratic targets for the 2016 election cycle and has been named a “One Term Wonder” by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
