Chameleon Watch – David Young Misleads Constituents on DHS Shutdown

Back home with voters, Congressman David Young might pretend to be a voice of reason, but once he’s in Washington, Young falls in lock step with Republicans. He told his constituents, “one thing that always gets done is you have to fund the government,” but yesterday Young sided with his extreme Republican colleagues in voting against a “clean” bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security. Had that vote been successful, Young and his Republican colleagues would have shut down DHS.

“Congressman Young would rather jeopardize the safety of Iowa families than get down to the responsible business of governing,” said Matt Thornton of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “When presented with a choice between sticking to his word or playing partisan games, Congressman Young chose his political security over our national security.”

Background

Back Home, Young Told Iowans No Matter What Happens, You “Always” Fund The Government

Young Told Creston Residents: “One Thing That Always Gets Done Is You Have To Fund The Government.” “He added it helps to know if the city applies federal loans and grants so he can advocate for approval while in Washington, D.C. ‘I am on the appropriations committee,’ Young said. ‘I am not there to just write the big checks … those days are over. When there is gridlock and government isn’t running, one thing that always gets done is you have to fund the government.’” [Creston News-Advertiser, 2/17/15]

Then He Came Back To Washington And Voted To Shut Down The Homeland Security Department

Young Voted Against Bill To Fund Department Of Homeland Security. On March 3, 2015, Young voted against a bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security. “The House of Representatives passed a bill on Tuesday funding the Department of Homeland Security through the end of September, effectively ending a congressional standoff that nearly shut the department down at the end of last week. The bill, identical to a measure that cleared the Senate last Friday, passed by a margin of 257 to 167, with 75 Republicans and 182 Democrats voting in favor.” [HR 240, Vote #109, 3/3/15; CBS, 3/3/15]
