DCCC Calls On House Republicans To End Dangerous Silence On Birthright Citizenship Extremism

With Republican leaders, including Donald Trump, Scott Walker and Ted Cruz, embracing and extolling the extreme ideology to end birthright citizenship, it is far past time for the elected members of their party to end their dangerous silence on this issue.

To expedite the end of this silence, the DCCC is launching a paid digital ad campaign in targeted districts across the country, encouraging constituents to contact their Representatives and tell them to denounce these hateful, reckless, and irresponsible ideas.

Birthright citizenship is rooted in the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, which states that “all persons born or naturalized in the United States … are citizens of the United States”.

The paid digital ad campaign targets Representatives Mike Coffman, Martha McSally, Steve Knight, Barbara Comstock, Cresent Hardy and Will Hurd.

In the case of Congressman Coffman, he has built a career of supporting out-of-touch and divisive policies, including that which seeks to end birthright citizenship. Other targets of this ad campaign have stood silent as these hateful policies are promoted on the national stage.

“First and foremost, efforts to end birthright citizenship are dangerous and bigoted, but they’re also horrible politics,” said Meredith Kelly of the DCCC. “These Republican members of Congress shouldn’t need any motivation to denounce the leaders of their party and their visceral attacks towards immigrants and their families, but sadly that is not the case.”
