Campaign During American Education Week Targets Students and Families in South Florida

Today, during American Education Week, the DCCC is launching a paid digital advertising campaign reminding South Floridians of Congressman Carlos Curbelo’s vote for the House Republican budget’s drastic cuts to education programs. Families in South Florida will be delivered ads calling out Congressman Curbelo and Speaker Paul D. Ryan on their vote to underfund the Head Start program, making it harder for Florida’s families to ensure a quality education for their children.

This week, as Floridians recognize the critical importance of our schools and educators, the contrast with Congressman Curbelo’s record couldn’t be clearer. Earlier this year, Congressman Curbelo voted with House Republicans to freeze the maximum Pell Grant award for ten years, effectively cutting the grant program that more than 31,000 students in his district rely on to pay for college. The House Republican budget could also prevent thousands of children from getting access to early education programs like Head Start.

These dramatic cuts to education have come to be hallmark House Republican proposals – past House Republican budgets, written by now-Speaker Paul D. Ryan, contained similar harmful cuts to education programs while at the same time giving massive tax breaks to corporations. Just last month, Congressman Curbelo reaffirmed his support for this vision – corporations before education – with his vote for Paul Ryan for Speaker of the House.

“Congressman Curbelo’s vote to cut education programs hurts Florida’s families, whether its parents looking to enroll their student in early education programs, or college students relying on Pell Grants to pay their way through school,” said Jermaine House of the DCCC. “This week, voters should remember that Congressman Curbelo and House Republicans want to cut education funding for students of all ages.”
