American Education Week Campaign Targets Students & Families in Colorado’s 6th District

Today, during American Education Week, the DCCC is launching a paid digital advertising campaign (see ad at end of release) reminding Coloradans that Congressman Coffman supports drastic cuts to vital education programs. Students and families in the district will see ads calling out Coffman and Speaker Ryan for their vote to underfund the Head Start program, which would hurt Colorado’s economy and families that want to ensure their children have access to quality, early education.

“Congressman Coffman’s vote to cut education programs hurts Colorado families, whether it’s parents looking to enroll their student in early education programs, or college students relying on Pell Grants to pay their way through school,” said DCCC Spokesman Tyler Law. “Washington Coffman sings a different tune than Campaign Coffman, and that’s why it’s so critical that we expose his out-of-touch priorities at every turn.”

This week, as Coloradans recognize the critical importance of our schools and educators, the contrast with Coffman’s record couldn’t be clearer. Earlier this year, Coffman voted to prevent thousands of children from getting access to early education programs like Head Start. These dramatic cuts to education have come to be hallmark House Republican proposals – past House Republican budgets, written by now-Speaker Ryan, contained similar harmful cuts to education programs while at the same time giving massive tax breaks to corporations.

Throughout his career, Coffman has come under fire for his out-of-touch positions with the Latino community – a fact that was reflected this year in an op-ed by State Representative Joe Salazar called: “Mike Coffman paved the way for anti-Immigrant Donald Trump.” Last cycle, State Senator Jesse Ulibarri took Coffman to task, writing a piece for the Denver Post about why “Mike Coffman is no friend to immigrants.”
