Democratic Convention Features Immigrants and Families Facing Hardship Caused by House Republicans’ Inaction

“On most days, I’m scared. What if I come home and find it empty?”

  • – Karla Ortiz, 11-year-old daughter of DAPA eligible parents

Unlike the Republican convention’s immigrant bashing and Trump’s unworkable and costly “build a wall” stance, the first night of the Democratic convention featured the hardship that many immigrant families go through when 11-year-old Karla Ortiz, her undocumented mother Francisca Ortiz, and DREAMer Astrid Silva bravely shared their personal stories.

These hardships are the result of years of Republican inaction and unwillingness to fix our broken immigration system. House Republicans have refused to put forward a real immigration plan, instead falling in line with Donald Trump and Paul Ryan, the man who traded away the possibility of immigration reform in exchange for the Speaker’s gavel. Most recently, House Republicans went out of their way to vote against smart immigration programs and for the separation of families – like Karla’s family – when they voted to send an amicus brief against DAPA to the Supreme Court.

“It is unconscionable that in America children have to worry about whether or not they will be separated from their families just because House Republicans adamantly oppose comprehensive immigration reform,” said Javier Gamboa of the DCCC. “As Republicans continue to build walls with Latino and immigrant families, Democrats are uniting together to fight for families and fix our broken immigration system once and for all.”
