Failure to Lead: Trump-Kremlin Scandal Explodes But House Republican Leadership Stays Silent

Troubling new information continues to burst from the unfolding political scandal involving President Trump, his top campaign aides, including former National Security Advisor General Michael T. Flynn, and their contacts with senior Russian intelligence officials.

Only hours after reports surfaced that President Trump knew that Flynn had lied to the White House about holding secret talks with the Russian ambassador about American sanctions against Russia, news broke that members of the Trump campaign had frequent contacts with Russian intelligence throughout his presidential run.

“The fact that members of the Trump campaign, including General Flynn, held secret talks with the Russian government is deeply troubling,” said DCCC Spokesman Tyler Law. “The American people deserve to know if these officials were acting on Trump’s instructions and the full extent of Russia’s grip on our democracy. House Republicans’ continued silence on the issue is an unacceptable failure of leadership.”

Despite the fact that the Russian government may have manipulated an American presidential election, leading House Republicans are turning a blind eye. Speaker Paul Ryan, House Oversight Chairman Jason Chaffetz and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes unanimously refused to pursue intelligence on Flynn’s dealing with Russia.

To House Republicans’ chagrin, some in their party are speaking out. Yesterday, Senator Lindsey Graham said, “I want to know, did General Flynn do this by himself or was he directed by somebody to do it…I think most Americans have a right to know whether or not this was a General Flynn rogue maneuver, or was he basically speaking for somebody else in the White House?”
