Forum Preview: Will DeMaio Finally Hold Himself Accountable?

Since CNN detailed shocking sexual harassment allegations against Carl DeMaio, he has been doing back flips trying to dodge questions and has refused to hold himself or his staff accountable for their actions during this Bob Filner-esque scandal. Ahead of today’s forum, here are three questions that DeMaio will struggle to answer:

In 2013, you claimed to have passed a polygraph test, but never released the complete test results. Your most recent accuser has now taken and passed two polygraph tests. Why should voters trust your integrity when you are refusing to take one to refute his allegations?

  • 2013: DeMaio Never Released Complete Polygraph Test Results Regarding Previous Sexual Misconduct Allegation. “DeMaio’s pattern of allegations and denials in this case is similar to last August when the Voice of OC published claims by state Sen. Ben Hueso, who served with DeMaio on the San Diego City Council. Hueso alleges that twice in 2009 he witnessed DeMaio masturbating in a restricted bathroom after DeMaio had delivered fiery political speeches during council meetings. San Diego Councilwoman Marti Emerald confirmed Hueso’s account, saying she encountered a shocked Hueso outside the restroom immediately after the first incident. DeMaio aggressively denied Hueso’s allegations, calling them ‘dirty politics’ during television interviews. He also claimed to have passed a polygraph test, but never released the complete test results.” [Voice of Orange County, 10/17/14]
  • Bosnich Took and Passed Polygraph Test Regarding Currently Sexual Harassment Allegation. “Once police were involved, however, Bosnich took a polygraph test. The results of the June 14 test were later provided to CNN and other media. The results show ‘no deception indicated.’” [Voice of Orange County, 10/17/14; Forensic Technologies Polygraph Test, 6/14/14]
  • Bosnich Took and Passed Polygraph Test Regarding DeMaio Campaign HQ Burglary. “On Friday, Bosnich’s lawyers sent CNN the results of a lie detector test Bosnich took on Thursday. The test asked whether Bosnich entered DeMaio’s headquarters last May on the days when the break-in could have occurred. It also asks whether Bosnich committed ‘the alleged illegal activities in Carl DeMaio’s campaign headquarters in May of this year?’ Bosnich answered ‘no’ to both questions. The report said Bosnich’s answers were ‘truthful’ and found ‘no deception.’” [CNN, 10/17/14]

You have pledged to take on your party to be more inclusive and fired your staffer for inappropriate tweets soon after their discovery. Why should voters trust your judgment when you have refused to condemn your campaign manager for saying that being black was a “red flag” for campaign staff – even after he himself apologized?

You have well-documented political ties to San Diego District Attorney Bonnie Dummanis, who has rejected calls to recuse her office from the sexual misconduct and burglary cases. In the interest of a fair and balanced investigation, why haven’t you asked her to recuse herself?

  • April 2014: DeMaio Campaigned with Dumanis, Advocated for her Re-Election, and Praised her Work in the D.A.’s Office. DeMaio: Also, we are joined tonight by District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis. And her election should be done in June. I think it will be done in June.  I think she’s gonna have an outstanding result. But you are looking at someone who took over a District Attorney’s Office when it was a complete state of mess and she rebuilt it brick by brick, restoring integrity, has an amazing conviction rate and she is a leader statewide on a number of law enforcement issues.  She is a great voice on those issues statewide.  And so I can’t think of any reason why we wouldn’t want to resoundingly elect her.  So please do what you can for Bonnie. [Downtown Republican Women monthly meeting, 25:11, 4/17/14]
