ICYMI: Ratings Change in VA-10: Comstock Becomes More Vulnerable

In case you missed it, as numerous strong candidates announce their campaigns against vulnerable Congresswoman Barbara Comstock, Inside Elections moved Virginia’s 10th congressional district to “Tilt Republican”.  Recently the Cook Political Report also moved the race towards the Democrats, rating it “Toss Up.”

“Congresswoman Comstock has failed her constituents repeatedly over recent months; from her well documented refusal to meet with her constituents publicly, to her refusal to speak out against her party’s reckless health care repeal bill, to her tepid response to reports that President Trump’s campaign has ties to the Russian government. This rating change is further proof that no matter how hard Congresswoman Comstock flaps in the political winds, her reelection prospects do not look bright,” said Cole Leiter of the DCCC.

10th District (Barbara Comstock, R, re-elected 53%). Clinton 52%. The competitive suburban district will continue to receive a lot of attention because of its proximity to Washington, D.C. Comstock over performed Trump, but the President might be digging himself a deeper hole. State Sen. Jennifer Wexton is running, has support from Reps. Don McEachin and Gerry Connolly, and strategists are encouraged by her Loudoun County base. But she won’t clear the primary field. Even though First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe declined to run, Lindsey Stover (former Texas Rep. Chet Edwards’ chief of staff), former Fairfax Education Association teachers’ union president Kimberly Adams and Army veteran Daniel Helmer are running. Local Democratic leaders will decide this fall whether the nominee will be chosen by a primary or convention, but Wexton should have the advantage in either scenario. Move from Lean R to Tilts R.
