ICYMI: Sheriff Scott Jones Takes Heat Over Campaign Transparency

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

This weekend, the Sacramento Bee’s editorial board took Sheriff Scott Jones to task for his “cavalier attitude toward transparency,” calling it “unacceptable for any elected official.” Jones made it particularly difficult to obtain his campaign finance filings, forcing constituents to pay $75 just to read them.

The editorial board also wrote that “[v]oters in Congressional District 7 should consider many factors when deciding whom to support next year. Surely one factor is a candidate’s willingness to be transparent.”

This is just one more scandal casting a shadow on Jones’ candidacy. Jones also continues to face scrutiny for the increase in the use of deadly force, beatings, and the deaths of inmates and mentally ill residents under his watch. Jones even promoted one of his officers who was facing an $800,000 lawsuit for excessive use of force against a homeless man. The tolerance of his department’s misconduct is not only reprehensible, it has cost Sacramento County taxpayers.
