Does Mike Bishop Stand By Now-Indicted Conspirators Over Planned Parenthood Videos?

Bishop said Congress should “hold [Planned Parenthood’s] feet to the flames”

In light of the news that a Texas grand jury has indicted the two creators of the heavily-edited Planned Parenthood videos and rejected criminal allegations against Planned Parenthood, it’s clear Congressman Mike Bishop was all too eager to jump to conclusions at the risk of women’s health.

In committee hearings and interviews, Mike Bishop accused Planned Parenthood multiple times of violating the law, threatening to “hold their feet to the flames” if they continued to “run amok.”

Mike Bishop is even a cosponsor of legislation that could outright ban common forms of birth control – like the Pill. In light of this grand jury decision, does Mike Bishop still stand by his actions and the alleged criminal conspirators behind the attacks on Planned Parenthood?

We have long known that Congressmen Mike Bishop shows more willingness to protect his own interests than the interest of women in his district, but does Bishop still stand with the now-indicted creators of the Planned Parenthood videos? After six votes to defund Planned Parenthood, and standing behind legislation that could ban birth control, it’s not easy to deliver a dose of reality to Bishop’s positions on women’s health, but maybe these charges will be enough,” said Sacha Haworth of the DCCC.

Background:

Bishop Voted Six Times Against Funding For Planned Parenthood. Since 2015, Bishop has voted six times to attempt to defund Planned Parenthood, in part or whole. Bishop Cosponsored Personhood Legislation That Could Ban Nearly All Abortions and Common Forms Of Birth Control Like The Pill. In March 2015, Bishop signed on to cosponsor the Life At Conception Act, which would “implement equal protection under the 14th article of amendment to the Constitution for the right to life of each born and preborn human person” while defining human person “at all stages of life, including the moment of fertilization.” The act further stated that “nothing in this Act shall be construed to authorize the prosecution of any woman for the death of her unborn child.” [HR 816, Bill Text, Cosponsored, 3/16/15]

Bishop Said Videos Demonstrate “That Congress Step Up And Not Continue To Allow Planned Parenthood To Run Amok.” “It’s sickening. The entire series of undercover tapes that I have seen is absolutely sickening. And it’s really incumbent on Congress now to hold Planned Parenthood’s feet to the flames and make sure that they understand that we are not going to tolerate it. Which means we ought not be funding them at a time when they are violating the law and doing it in such a way to shock the conscious of the country. You have to explain this to kids even. I’ve got young kids. Try to explain what’s going on in the news today about Planned Parenthood talking about fetal body parts as though it’s an inanimate object and selling them on the market. It’s shocking to me and it’s imperative that Congress step up and not continue to allow Planned Parenthood to run amok.” [1320 WILS Interview, 9/01/15]
