Mike Coffman’s Closing Argument to Voters: Struggling to Keep Government Funded

Government funding expires in two days

As one of the shortest and least productive Congresses in recent history comes to a close and Mike Coffman gears up to race home and fight for his reelection, voters in Colorado would expect that their Member of Congress is doing one last push for important legislation they can tout on the campaign trail as a justification to send them back to Washington for another term. But as has been the case in this Republican-controlled Congress – either obstructing progress or barely functioning – they are stumbling to deal with another manufactured crisis, barely able to keep the lights on.

Government funding expires on September 30th – this Friday – and Paul Ryan and the Republicans in Congress are scrambling to finish work on a short-term extension. Are they working hard to address big issues Coloradans want to see solved? No, it’s all they can do just to keep the government from shutting down and tackle emergencies that should have been dealt with months ago without controversy. And even then, it is just an extension until December 9th.

“If Mike Coffman was counting on running on his record of accomplishment in Congress, he should rethink that plan,” said Tyler Law of the DCCC. “We don’t have to work very hard to imagine what an obstructionist Congress looks like – we are living it today, and it isn’t pretty.”
