NEW POLL: O’Halleran Well-Positioned to Win in Arizona’s First District

In Arizona’s First Congressional District, Democrat Tom O’Halleran maintains a solid lead over the embattled and scandalized Paul Babeu. The polling confirms what we have been saying all along: Babeu is a uniquely poor general election candidate and O’Halleran’s moderate profile matches the district.

“Paul Babeu is one of the most scandal-ridden and unqualified candidates in recent memory,” said DCCC Spokesman Tyler Law. “From overseeing the inhumane abuse of special needs students at the DeSisto School to misusing public funds as sheriff, Babeu has a very disturbing record that voters are just starting to learn more about. This poll reflects the simple fact that Arizonans don’t want to be represented by someone that they can’t trust.”

Key Takeaways:

  • At the top of the ticket, Hillary Clinton holds a slight edge over Donald Trump (46% Clinton/43% Trump), creating a favorable environment for Democrats lower down the ballot in this swing district.
  • Tom O’Halleran holds an even larger lead over Paul Babeu (45% O’Halleran/38% Babeu). Since August, he has improved his standing with independent voters – the key voting bloc in a district with near-even numbers of Democrats and Republicans – who now support O’Halleran by a five-point margin (41%/36%).
  • O’Halleran is over performing the top of the ticket despite much lower name recognition than his opponent, indicating O’Halleran has plenty of room to grow his vote share.
  • O’Halleran has a +18 net favorable rating while Babeu has a -4 net favorable rating.
