Who is Rob Simmons Kidding?

Simmons already running away from his support for privatizing Social Security.

As the Bush Administration begins its campaign to privatize Social Security and cut benefits, GOP Rep. Rob Simmons is beginning his own campaign to hide his past support for privatizing Social Security.

Simmons told the Washington Post "there is no way he will support Bush's idea of allowing younger Americans to divert some of their payroll taxes into private accounts." [Washington Post, 1/11/05; "In GOP, Resistance on Social Security"]

Oh really?

  • Back in 2001, Simmons co-signed a letter to the President's Commission to Strengthen Social Security urging support for privatization. Simmons wrote to the Commission: "Social Security reform must offer younger workers the opportunity to improve their rates of return using personal retirement accounts." ["DeMint Letter" to The Social Security Reform Commission, 5/24/01]
  • And later that year Simmons voted in favor of privatizing Social Security by opposing an amendment prohibiting implementation of the final report of President Bush's Commission to Strengthen Social Security. [HR 2590, Roll Call #273, 7/25/01]

"Seniors depend on Social Security for their retirement security, but they can't rely on Republicans like Rob Simmons to defend the program," said DCCC Chairman Rahm Emanuel (IL). "First, Simmons urged the President's Commission to privatize Social Security. Now he claims there is 'no way' he'll back Bush's push for privatization. How can seniors in Norwich or Groton trust Rob Simmons with their Social Security checks when there's no telling what his next position will be?"
