GOP Budget Raids Social Security

Nancy Johnson says she wants to protect Social Security, but the budget she supports raids the Soc. Sec. trust fund of more than $1 trillion.

While GOP Nancy Johnson tells her Connecticut constituents that Social Security is in danger and that she wants to protect the Social Security Trust Fund for the future, she is also poised to vote this afternoon for a House GOP budget that if passed, would raid the Social Security Trust Fund of more than $1.1 trillion over the next five years.

Once again, Nancy Johnson is trying to have it both ways on the issue of Social Security. At home in Connecticut, Rep. Johnson tells her constituents that Social Security is in crisis and that she wants to protect the Social Security system "for the retirees of today and tomorrow" [Johnson release, 1/26/05]. Nancy Johnson can't be too worried about future Social Security beneficiaries, however, or she wouldn't have signed onto the President's increasingly unpopular plan to privatize Social Security, even though it would slash Social Security benefits by 46%. [CBPP, 1/28/05, http: //www.cbpp.org/12-17-04socsec.htm].

When it comes times to vote in Washington, D.C., however, Nancy Johnson is singing a different tune. Johnson is now poised to vote for her 5th straight GOP budget that would raid the Social Security Trust Fund, this time by more than $1 trillion. According to the non-partisan Congressional Quarterly House Action Reports, the House Republican budget will raid more than $1 trillion dollars from the Social Security Trust Fund: "These budget deficits are produced, however, only by using surpluses in the Social Security trust funds. Without counting these Social Security surpluses, the deficits would be much larger... Over the five-year period, the budget resolution counts $1.1 trillion in Social Security funds to produce these deficits." [CQ House Action Reports, Budget Resolution for FY 2006, 3/14/05]

Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair Rep. Rahm Emanuel called on Nancy Johnson today to vote against the GOP budget, and against raiding the trust fund.

"Nancy Johnson says she wants to protect the Social Security Trust Fund. If that is accurate, now is the time to do something about it, " said Emanuel. "If Rep. Johnson is truly worried about the future of Social Security, she should drop her support for privatization, which will slash Social Security benefits, and vote NO on the budget that will raid the trust fund."
