Rep. Clay Shaw: Tom DeLay's Newest Crony of the Week

Shaw takes tens of thousands of dollars in campaign cash from DeLay; puts national party and DeLay ahead of his Florida constituents.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee today announced Rep. Clay Shaw of the 22nd district of Florida as its newest Tom DeLay "Crony of the Week." Shaw will be featured for the next 7 days on the DCCC's Tom DeLay House of Scandal website.

Clay Shaw has a long record of standing side-by-side with Tom DeLay on almost every issue, and with his designation as the newest Crony of Week, now Shaw's Florida constituents can know the truth about Rep. Shaw's close ties to the ethically-challenged DeLay.

"Few Republican members of the House of Representatives are tied as tightly to Tom DeLay's House of Scandal as Clay Shaw. Shaw has taken tens of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from Tom DeLay and his voting record is nearly identical to his, " said Bill Burton, communications director of the DCCC. "The more time Clay Shaw spends protecting Tom DeLay, the less time he has to protect middle class families in Florida. As Clay Shaw spends his time in Washington standing up for Tom DeLay and the special interests, Florida families are up against record-high gas prices, soaring health care costs and prescription drug prices that are spiraling out of control. Clay Shaw has put party above his obligation to his voters for too long and it's time for change."

The DCCC's House of Scandal website is a powerful, informational resource that serves as a clearinghouse of information about the various scandals and charges leveled against Tom DeLay and his allies. The website, found at www.houseofscandal.org, or at www.dccc.org, shows the lines that connect the scandals that surround Tom DeLay and specifically documents the ways that Tom DeLay and his closest allies were able to depose the chairman of the House Ethics Committee, gut the House ethics rules to protect DeLay, and halt for months any meaningful action to put an end to the ethics cloud hanging over the Congress.

Rep. Shaw's Crony of the Week page on the House of Scandal website details for Floridians just how closely linked Clay Shaw and Tom DeLay really are:

  • Clay Shaw has taken more than $30,000 from DeLay's political action committee, ARMPAC [www.tray.com].
  • Tom DeLay has been admonished a record three times by the House Ethics Committee for his unethical behavior, and is about to have the face the committee yet again -- yet Clay Shaw gave Tom DeLay's legal fund $5,000.
  • Shaw puts partisan politics before what is right for his constituents in the 22nd district of Florida - Shaw voted with DeLay more than 95% of the time between January 1, 2004 and March 31, 2005 [www.cq.com].
  • Clay Shaw voted to weaken the House Ethics rules in a move that many say served only to protect Tom DeLay. When Democrats offered a solution to clean up the House by strengthening ethics rules, Shaw voted to make sure it never even came to an up or down vote.
