AD WATCH: Thelma Drake’s New Ad Running Empty on Facts

In her first misleading ad of the 2008 election, Representative Thelma Drake (VA-02) claims that she is working to lower gas prices.  In reality, Drake has taken over $85,000 from Big Oil, and voted against real solutions to lower gas prices while continuing to give billions in tax giveaways to oil and gas companies.

"Thelma Drake's attempts to paint herself as bipartisan when it comes to solving our nation's energy crisis are laughable at best," said Kyra Jennings, Southern Regional Press Secretary at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. "Thelma Drake is 100% beholden to President Bush and Big Oil, which is why she votes against a comprehensive energy plan with environmentally responsible drilling and votes for $85 billion in subsidies for oil companies."

Drake Claim: I've reached out across the aisle and helped craft a bipartisan plan to help lower the cost of energy.

FACT: Thelma Drake voted AGAINST a comprehensive, bipartisan solution to help solve America's energy crisis.  This week Drake voted against the comprehensive American Energy Security and Consumer Protection Act that expands domestic and renewable sources of energy to increase our security, ends unnecessary subsidies to Big Oil companies, creates green energy jobs in America, and puts America on the path toward energy independence. FACT: Drake has voted against increased drilling.  This week, Drake opposed a bill that would permit leasing between 50 and 100 miles offshore if a state opts-in and opens the remaining Outer Continental Shelf beyond 100 miles to oil and gas leasing.  [HR 6899, Vote#599, 9/16/08]

FACT: Drake voted to protect tax breaks for oil companies rather than fund wind and solar power.  In February, Drake voted against eliminating tax benefits for oil and gas companies and investing the savings in renewable energy.  [HR 5351, Roll Call #84, 2/27/08]

FACT: Drake voted against incentives for solar and wind technologies.  In 2005, Drake voted against an alternative energy plan that would have extended tax credits for investments in solar, wind, geothermal and biomass technologies and would have provided several tax incentives for energy efficiency.
