Representative Shelley Moore Capito and President George W. Bush Celebrate Their Independence from Accountability

President Bush will be in West Virginia with Representative Shelley Moore Capito on July 4th to celebrate another kind of Independence Day - their independence from accountability.

“It’s fitting that Shelley Moore Capito and President Bush will spend their Independence Day together since they both fail to hold people responsible for their actions,” said Jennifer Crider, Communications Director for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “Shelley Moore Capito refuses to hold the President accountable for his failed policies in Iraq. President Bush refuses to hold Scooter Libby accountable for breaking the law. Americans want leaders who bring more accountability to Washington, not less.”

Background:

Rep. Shelley Moore Capito and President Bush’s joint record on accountability:

Ø On July 2, 2007, President Bush commuted the 30-month prison sentence for L. Scooter Libby, who was convicted of perjury in March.

Ø Capito protected President Bush from being held accountable by opposing a measure to bring our troops home by August 2008 [HR 1591, Vote #186, 3/23/07]

Ø Capito voted against overriding President Bush’s veto of a bill to fund America’s troops and veterans and hold the President accountable for his misguided Iraq policy. [Passage, Objections of the President Not Withstanding, Vote #276, 5/02/07]

Ø Capito opposed a resolution condemning President Bush’s decision to deploy more than 20,000 additional U.S. combat troops to Iraq. [HConRes 63, Vote #99, 2/16/07]

Ø Capito opposed oversight hearings into President Bush’s policies relating to the Iraq War. [Motion to Table the Appeal of the Ruling of the Chair, Vote #562, 11/03/05]
