Chairman Israel’s Statement on Medicare’s 47th Anniversary with 100 Days until the Election

DCCC Chairman Steve Israel released the following statement on the 47th anniversary of Medicare being signed into law tomorrow (July 30, 1965) as the final 100 days of the campaign begin:

“Forty-seven years ago, Medicare started to protect seniors and for the next 100 days we will fight to stop House Republicans from ending it so they can protect tax breaks for their millionaire campaign contributors.

“Forty-eight million Americans rely on the Medicare benefits they’ve earned through a lifetime of hard work but Republicans are demanding more tax breaks for millionaires, Big Oil, and companies shipping jobs overseas instead of protecting those benefits.

“This election is about who you’re for: the middle class and seniors or millionaires and special interests. If Republicans succeed in these 100 days, today may well be the last anniversary Medicare has.”
