DCCC Chairman Steve Israel’s Statement on the Nomination of Rep. Mel Watt to head FHFA

DCCC Chairman Steve Israel released the following statement on the appointment of Representative Mel Watt to head the Federal Housing Finance Agency:

“Mel Watt is a dedicated public servant, a leader for North Carolina families, and a civil rights pioneer. As a former Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, Mel led the response to the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina and successfully fought to expand and reauthorize the Voting Rights Act.

Having served with Mel on the Financial Services Committee, I know him as a careful, thoughtful legislator who takes on the most challenging and complex issues. His deep expertise in the housing sector will make him an excellent leader for the Federal Housing Finance Agency.

“On behalf of the DCCC, I thank Congressman Watt for his distinguished service in the House, and wish him well in his new role steering our nation’s housing policy. We look forward to electing a Democrat to fill this Democratic seat who will strengthen the middle class, create jobs, and fight for the families of Charlotte and Greensboro.”
