Does Rob Cornilles Agree With Jim Greenfield and House Republicans’ Plan to End Medicare?

Republican congressional candidate Jim Greenfield (OR-01) yesterday made clear his support for the Republican budget plan to end Medicare, and now people in Oregon’s first district deserve to know where Republican Rob Cornilles stands too.  Greenfield was asked at a forum yesterday about his support for Representative Paul Ryan’s plan that would end Medicare and responded, “Yeah, I think it would be a big improvement.”

Now the question is: Does Rob Cornilles agree with his Republican primary opponent and every Oregon House Republican Member of Congress?

“Jim Greenfield has made his position clear, now Rob Cornilles should tell Oregonians if he would also support an extreme budget plan that ends Medicare,” said Amber Moon, Western Regional Press Secretary at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “Voters deserve to know if Rob Cornilles would stand with Jim Greenfield and every other House Republican in Oregon to balance the budget on the backs of Oregon seniors.”

The Republican budget would deny 620,000 individuals in Oregon’s First Congressional District age 54 and younger access to Medicare’s guaranteed benefit and increase health care costs for thousands of seniors already on Medicare, almost doubling healthcare costs for seniors.

Jim Greenfield Said the Ryan Budget Didn’t Cut Enough. In 2011, Greenfield was asked about his position on the Ryan budget at the Green Fox Forum. He said, “Yeah, I think it would be a big improvement. I mean I don’t know all the details of it. You know I would want to cut even more, but I think it is definitely a step in the right direction.” [George Fox Forum, 9/27/11]

Republican Ryan Budget Ends Medicare As We Know It. “The plan would essentially end Medicare, which now pays most of the health-care bills for 48 million elderly and disabled Americans, as a program that directly pays those bills.” [Wall Street Journal, 4/4/11]

Republican Budget Would Deny 620,000 Individuals Access to Medicare’s Guaranteed Benefits. According to the House Energy and Commerce Committee, the House Republican budget would deny 620,000 individuals in Oregon’s First Congressional District age 54 and younger access to Medicare’s guaranteed benefit. It would increase health costs for 128,000 individuals in the district by over $6,000 per year in 2022, forcing those between the ages of 44 and 54 to save an average of $182,000 to $287,000 per person to pay for the increased cost of health coverage over their lifetimes. [House Energy and Commerce Committee, 6/11]

Republican Budget Jeopardizes Nursing Home Care for 800 People in the District. According to the House Energy and Commerce Committee, the Republican budget would reduce the federal contribution to Medicaid by nearly $800 billion over the next decade. It would reduce coverage for 9,600 dual eligible seniors and individuals with disabilities in Oregon’s first congressional district, who rely on Medicaid to supplement their healthcare coverage. It would also jeopardize nursing home care for 800 people in the district whose expenses are paid by Medicaid. [House Energy and Commerce Committee, 6/11]
