Martha McSally’s Mentor: America Should Ignore the Middle Class
In a Senate floor speech yesterday, Martha McSally’s endorser and donor Senator Jon Kyl said America should ignore the middle class, even going so far as to say that the term “middle class” is “dangerous.” When the Senator endorsed McSally in June, she noted “I learned so much from Senator Kyl’s example.” But does Martha McSally agree with Senator Kyl that we should ignore the middle class?
McSally is already on record supporting the dangerous Republican budget that would be disastrous for Arizona’s middle class by giving tax breaks to millionaires and Big Oil, while cutting Medicare and raising health care costs for seniors.
“Senator Kyl’s shameful remarks beg the question of his handpicked candidate: does Martha McSally agree that America should ignore the middle class?” said Stephen Carter of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “Unfortunately for Arizona’s middle class we already know the answer: McSally would protect millionaires at the expense of middle-income Arizona families. Republicans like Senator Kyl and Martha McSally would ask the middle class and seniors to sacrifice, while refusing to ask the ultra-wealthy to sacrifice at all.”
McSally Received a Total of $15,000 from Senator Kyl’s Leadership PAC. In May, and twice again in June, McSally received $5,000 donations from Senator Jon Kyl’s leadership PAC, the Senate Majority Fund. [FEC Website, accessed 7/25/12; McSally for Congress July Quarterly Report, filed 7/13/12]
McSally Touted Endorsement of Senator Kyl. In June 2012, McSally announced she had received the endorsement of Senator Jon Kyl in her race for the new second congressional district. McSally said of Senator Kyl, “I learned so much from Senator Kyl’s example […] He’s a brilliant leader who works tirelessly to make a difference by being credible and respected by his colleagues on so many issues.” [McSally Press Release, 6/20/12]
Senator Kyl Railed Against Talking about the Middle Class. This week on the Senate floor, Senator Kyl berated President Obama telling him to stop talking about the middle class because the use of the term “middle class” is “misguided and wrong and even dangerous.” [Huffington Post, 7/23/12]
