Owen Hill Goes Birther, Seeks Congressman Coffman’s Endorsement

Media outlets are reporting today that another Colorado candidate, Senate candidate Owen Hill, is following in the footsteps of Congressman Mike Coffman and embracing birtherism. Last year, Coffman was caught on tape questioning whether President Obama was born in the United States and saying “he’s not an American.” Coffman’s beliefs made national news.

“Apparently Owen Hill is seeking Congressman Coffman’s endorsement, as they are two birthers in a pod who use hateful and false birther rhetoric when they think no one is watching,” said Brandon Lorenz. “Congressman Coffman has no problem endorsing birthers like Tom Tancredo, so he should have no problem backing his fellow birther, Owen Hill. From his voting record to his out-of-touch beliefs, Congressman Coffman is too far outside the mainstream for Colorado families.”

Coffman of course, also has called Colorado birther Tom Tancredo his “hero.”

BACKGROUND:

Congressman Coffman Said President Obama is “Not an American.” According to 9News, “Coffman had steadfastly refused to speak on camera regarding his May 12th comment at a fundraiser in Elbert County. The comments, recorded and posted online by a Coffman supporter, were first aired by 9NEWS. ‘I don't know whether Barack Obama was born in the United States of America. I don't know that,’ Coffman told donors. ‘But I do know this, that in his heart, he's not an American. He's just not an American.’  [9News, 5/22/12; Denver Post, 5/16/12]

Congressman Coffman Called Tancredo His “Hero” and Said That He Had Served “This Country With Honor and Integrity and Courage.” In 2010, while speaking at a Tea Party Express event, Coffman said: “It is a great honor for me to introduce, somebody that is my hero. Somebody that has served this country with honor and integrity and courage. Somebody when the republican establishment in Washington went so and violated the principles that got them elected, who did not stand with them and that is former congressman Tom Tancredo.” [Tea Party Express Event, YouTube 3/31/10]

  • Tom Tancredo Suggested that President Obama was Born in Kenya and Doesn’t Love America. In an interview, Tom Tancredo refused to say President Obama was born in the United States. ThinkProgress reported: “Anti-immigrant crusader Tom Tancredo told a Tea Party audience, ‘If his wife says Kenya is his homeland, why don’t we just send him back?’ Fox News’ Alan Colmes asked Tancredo about his statement on Colmes’ radio show yesterday. ‘Do you think he was born there?’ Colmes asked. ‘I have no idea, believe me I have no idea,’ Tancredo said, adding that whether or not he was born there, ‘I do not believe Barack Obama loves the same America that I do.’” [ThinkProgress, 4/28/10]
