Rather Than Own Up To His Support For Protecting Corporations That Ship Jobs Overseas, Charles Djou Tries to Change the Subject
Charles Djou likes to pretend he’ll always tell it straight.
Djou even made a straightforward promise:
“…if you ask me a straight question, you ask me what my position is on a particular matter, I will give you a straight answer.”
But when confronted with the fact that Djou supports protecting special interest tax breaks for corporations that ship jobs overseas – even with tens of thousands of Hawaiians looking for work – Djou didn’t offer an explanation or defend his position – he dismissed it as ‘negative campaigning.’
“Once again, rather than come clean with voters in Hawaii and explain why he supports special interest tax breaks for corporations that ship jobs overseas, Djou tried to change the subject,” said Andy Stone, Western Regional Press Secretary for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “With so many Hawaiians looking for jobs, Djou should be supporting policies that create jobs in Hawaii, not overseas.”
Background
- Charles Djou signed a pledge written by the Americans for Tax Reform to oppose tax increases. [Americans for Tax Reform Web Site, accessed 4/7/10]
- In response to a television advertisement, on his Facebook page, Djou argued, “The negative campaigning by the democratic [sic] party has begun…” [Djou for Congress 2010 Facebook page, 4/7/10]
- In a Hawaii Public Radio-hosted candidate debate, Charles Djou said, “I believe certainly if I’m fortunate enough to be elected to the United States Congress I cannot promise you that I will agree with you on every single one of your positions, but what I can promise you is that if you ask me a straight question, you ask me what my position is on a particular matter, I will give you a straight answer.” [Hawaii Public Radio 1st Congressional Candidates Debate, 3/15/10]
