Republican Candidate Compares Obamacare to the Fugitive Slave Act

Bill O’Brien, a Republican candidate for Congress and member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives, compared Obamacare to the Fugitive Slave Act. O’Brien said that Obamacare “is a law as destructive to personal and individual liberty as the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850.”

“Bill O’Brien’s comments have no place in our political discussion and Republican members of Congress should immediately condemn O’Brien for his remarks,” said Emily Bittner of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “O’Brien is another extremist in the Republican Party looking to bring his partisan and out-of-touch agenda to Congress. The voters of New Hampshire don’t want a Congressman who throws around hateful rhetoric; they want someone who supports solutions to fixing our nation’s health care system.”

BACKGROUND

O’Brien: Obamacare is “As Destructive to Personal and Individual Liberty as the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850.” A New Hampshire opponent of President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul law compares it to a 1793 law that imposed penalties on those who helped escaped slaves. Republican state Rep. Bill O'Brien, who is exploring a run for Congress, spoke Thursday at a picnic organized by the New Hampshire chapter of the conservative group Americans for Prosperity. He said the heath care law is just as destructive as the Fugitive Slave Act, which punished anyone who helped escaped slaves and allowed governments to seize and return them to their owners. ‘Barack Obama and our allies fooled us long enough to pass a law that is clearly among the worst ever enacted by Congress,’ O'Brien said.” [Associated Press, 8/01/13]

Republican Legislators Blamed O’Brien and His Radical Positions for Losing the New Hampshire State House. “Since the moment he took the gavel, House Speaker William O’Brien has been a political lightning rod. Now, in the aftermath of the election in which Republicans lost control of the state Legislature, lawmakers from both parties credit O’Brien, his uncompromising conservative views and his aggressive governing tactics for contributing to the Democratic sweep.” [Nashua Telegraph, 11/11/12]
