Van Hollen Statement on Neglected FL-13 Voting

According to news reports, Florida elections officials and Sarasota County's Supervisor of Elections were warned in August 2006 of voting machine malfunctions but neglected to make changes or disclose the problems. In response Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Chris Van Hollen released the following statement.

“The latest development in Christine Jennings’ congressional race raises even more serious questions about the integrity of the election process in Florida’s 13th District. It turns out that the voting machine company and state and county election officials all knew before Election Day that there was a problem with the machines and didn’t do anything to fix it. What is even more disturbing is that election officials withheld the information about the voting machine problem.

“It is long past time for an independent review of the machines and the software, so we can learn once and for all why 18,000 votes weren't counted. This new information makes it clear that immediate action is needed to restore the integrity of this election and confidence to the voters that every vote cast is counted.”
