Will Rob Cornilles Stand with House Republicans and End Medicare?

As the special congressional election in Oregon gears up, voters want to know - does Republican candidate Rob Cornilles support the controversial House Republican budget plan to end Medicare?  Cornilles should tell Oregon seniors and families if he supports the House Republican radical agenda to end Medicare while protecting taxpayer subsidies for Big Oil companies.

“Rob Cornilles needs to take a position on Paul Ryan’s budget plan that would end Medicare,” said Amber Moon, Western Regional Press Secretary at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “House Republicans are moving forward with their radical agenda putting their misguided priorities ahead of Oregon families and seniors all to protect taxpayer subsidies for Big Oil companies.  Rob Cornilles has to decide if he is going to fight for middle class families and focus on job creation or give into a dangerous, partisan plan to end Medicare.”

Background

Republican Ryan Budget Ends Medicare As We Know It. “The plan would essentially end Medicare, which now pays most of the health-care bills for 48 million elderly and disabled Americans, as a program that directly pays those bills.” [Wall Street Journal, 4/4/11]

Republican Budget Would Deny 620,000 Individuals Access to Medicare’s Guaranteed Benefits. According to the House Energy and Commerce Committee, the House Republican budget would deny 620,000 individuals in Oregon’s First Congressional District age 54 and younger access to Medicare’s guaranteed benefit. It would increase health costs for 128,000 individuals in the district by over $6,000 per year in 2022, forcing those between the ages of 44 and 54 to save an average of $182,000 to $287,000 per person to pay for the increased cost of health coverage over their lifetimes. GOP Budget Would Almost Double Healthcare Costs For Seniors. “The Republican congressman's proposal to privatize Medicare would mean a dramatic hike in U.S. healthcare costs for the elderly, an independent analysis finds. Seniors would pay almost double — more than $12,510 a year.” [LA Times, 4/7/11]

Republican Budget Jeopardizes Nursing Home Care for 800 People in the District. According to the House Energy and Commerce Committee, the Republican budget would reduce the federal contribution to Medicaid by nearly $800 billion over the next decade. It would reduce coverage for 9,600 dual eligible seniors and individuals with disabilities in the district, who rely on Medicaid to supplement their healthcare coverage. It would also jeopardize nursing home care for 800 people in the district whose expenses are paid by Medicaid. [House Energy and Commerce Committee, 6/11]
