Woody Jenkinsí Supporters Put Whatís Best for China First

Freedom’s Watch, a shadowy outside organization, is running ads attacking Democratic candidate, Don Cazayoux, in the LA-06 special election.  What Louisianans watching these misleading political attacks don’t know is that Sheldon Adelson – the “single donor who essentially dictates the way things occur or do not occur” at Freedom’s Watch – used his influence with Tom DeLay to put China’s interests before America’s.

“Voters in Louisiana deserve to know who is funding shadowy outside groups running misleading attack ads against Don Cazayoux.  With benefactors like Sheldon Adelson, Freedom’s Watch’s motto should be ‘Putting China First,’” said Jennifer Crider, Communications Director at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.  “With supporters like this, it’s no wonder Freedom’s Watch is illegally trying to hide their donors from Louisiana voters.”

In 2001, Sheldon Adelson used Tom DeLay – one of the most corrupt Members of Congress – to block Congressional action on a resolution asking the U.S. Olympic Committee to vote against China's bid to host the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing.  The resolution was in response to China’s holding of 24 members of the U.S. Navy for 11 days after their plane crashed on Chinese soil earlier that year.  At the time, Adelson was in negotiations over the casino his company planned to open in Macau, China.

The DCCC filed an FEC complaint against Freedom’s Watch today for running a political attack ad that directly and illegally advocates the defeat of Democratic candidate Don Cazayoux and also for failing to disclose the names of the donors funding that ad.  This is the second complaint the DCCC has filed with the FEC on the political attack ads that Freedom’s Watch is running in the LA-06 special election against Cazayoux.   The first complaint was on Freedom’s Watch and the NRCC’s illegal coordination of their attack ads.

BACKGROUND

Adelson is currently being sued by a former business associate alleging non-payment for helping him secure a casino in Macau, China.

It was reported today in the Las Vegas Review Journal, that Sheldon Adelson and his top executive, William Weidner gave conflicting testimony – under oath – of the Las Vegas Sands’ effort to stop Congress from voting on a resolution in 2001 that would have asked the U.S. Olympic Committee to vote against China's bid to host the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing.  The legislation was in response to China holding 24 members of the U.S. military for 11 days after their plane crashed on Chinese soil earlier that year.

  • “Adelson, on behalf of the Beijing mayor, contacted House Majority Leader Tom Delay to ask about the legislation. Following the call, Adelson was told the bill would not come up for a vote. Weidner then contacted the company's Washington, D.C.-based lobbying firm with instructions to tell the Chinese embassy that Las Vegas Sands  Click for Enhanced Coverage Linking Searcheswas involved with keeping the vote from happening. He said Beijing officials were grateful. [Las Vegas Review Journal, 4/22/08]

Adelson Is The Primary Funder, Decision Maker At Freedom’s Watch

  • According to the New York Times, “Mr. Adelson has insisted on parceling out his money project by project, as opposed to setting an overall budget, limiting the group's ability to plan and be nimble, the Republican operatives said. Mr. Adelson, who has a reputation for being combative, has rejected almost all of the staff's proposals that have been brought to him, leaving the organization moribund for long stretches, the operatives said.

  • ''What has happened here is pretty much you had a single donor who essentially dictates the way things occur or do not occur,'' said one of the Republican operatives.” [New York Times, 4/12/08]

Freedoms Watch Pledged to Spend $250 Million to Defeat Congressional Democrats

  • Adelson has been a “significant donor” to Freedom’s Watch, a group that spent $15 million in summer 2007 on radio and television ads in 23 states and nearly 60 congressional districts defending Bush’s war policy. [New York Times, 4/12/08; Las Vegas Sun, 10/07/07; New York Times, 9/30/07]

  • Freedom’s Watch is currently running $384,000 worth of ads attacking Democrat Don Cazayoux in LA-06. [Federal Election Commission, Electioneering Communication Report, Filed: 4/16/2008; reports of future buys]
