Taking America in a New Direction

Last November, the American people said they were tired with the way business was done in Washington. They demanded a change in leadership and new direction for our nation.

Democrats have raised the level of civility and fairness in the House while delivering on the issues that our important to our nation. Already the Democrats have raised the minimum wage for hardworking Americans, expanded the fight against global warming, brought new accountability to the Bush Administration, and started cleaning up the Republicans' culture of corruption.

  
Minimum Wage   Minimum Wage- As a step toward putting the people's House back in the hands of the people, the Democratic Congress sent to the President the first raise in the minimum wage in more than a decade.
     
  Gas Prices- Gas prices have skyrocketed, hitting record highs as we head into the summer driving season. After six years of Republican failure, Democrats have taken real action passing two bills to stop gas price gouging and make it easier for the government to prevent price manipulation in the future.
     
  Stem Cell Research- The Democratic Congress passed a bill to expand lifesaving stem cell research. This research could save or better the lives of those suffering from cancer, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and many other diseases that afflict millions of Americans.
     
  Iraq- Democrats implemented reporting and accountability provisions to hold the President accountable in his failed Iraq policy. They are committed to ending blank checks for the President's policy of the status quo-- more troops, more money, more time and more of the same.
     
  Energy- Democrats have voted to roll back multi-billion dollar taxpayer subsidies for Big Oil companies and to reinvest that money here at home in renewable energy and energy efficiency.
     
  Lobbying Reform- The Democratic Congress has begun to change the way business is done in Washington. The Democratic plan ends the K Street project, requires improved disclosure of contributions to members' charities or entities, and establishes a public database of member travel and personal financial disclosure forms. The Democratic Congress is dedicated to ending the culture of corruption.
