They Deserve a Raise

Don't Veto a Pay Raise for Our Troops

Incredibly, President Bush has threatened to veto a Democratic plan to give our troops a much needed pay raise. Even with one in five military families surviving on food stamps, the President won’t support a modest 3.5% pay increase. Supporting our troops is more than just words. It's about taking action.

Speaker Pelosi appeared on PBS's NewsHour and discussed Democratic accomplishments, the Iraq war, and the news of the day.

Outrage From Across the Nation

More than 20,000 people voiced their outrage about President Bush continuing to ignore the will of the American people. Comments came in from coast to coast, all of whom want to see a New Direction in Iraq.

It is time to change direction in Iraq. The legislation you just vetoed goes against all that Congress and the American people stand for. - Marilyn, MS

Now is the time to change the direction of the war!!! -Charles, CA

PLEASE WORK WITH CONGRESS TO END THIS WAR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. -Penelope, TN

I am the wife to a SGT in the US Army. My husband was due to be out of the military shortly after the birth of our first child...he was deployed to Iraq for 12 months. Now that has just been extended to 15 months...It is time for a "New Direction in Iraq." Bring our troops home now! -Aniela, KS

Mr. President, your strategy isn't working. What are you going to do to change this situation? The American people want to see a new direction and bring our troops home. Iraq needs to take responsibility for its country. -Diane & William, NM

I am totally OUTRAGED at the veto of the Democratic plan for change in Iraq. As the mother of 2 veteran soldiers - one who served in Desert Storm, and one who just recently returned from Iraq, and is likely to have to return again soon - I feel this veto is a slap in the face to all our troops, and you should be ashamed of yourself for "playing politics" with their lives.
