SHOT/CHASER – Rep. Denham Hopes You Forgot He Wants to Deport All Undocumented Immigrants

SHOT: Congressman Jeff Denham introduces the ENLIST Act to let undocumented immigrants serve in the military.

CHASER: Denham built his anti-immigrant record by agreeing with the statement that “anyone who is here right now as an illegal immigrant should be arrested, detained, and deported,” opposing the federal DREAM Act, and supporting Arizona’s radical anti-immigrant law in 2010.

Background:

Denham Called for Deportation Of All Undocumented Immigrants. In a May 2010 debate, when asked whether illegal immigrants should be “arrested, detained and deported,” Denham said, “Yes.”

Question: Let’s start with the issue of illegal immigration. Do you believe that anyone who is here right now as an illegal immigrant should be arrested, detained, and deported and, if so, what would that do to the Valley agricultural economy and the overall economy?

Denham: A simple answer is, yes, we’ve got to uphold the laws of our state, laws of our nation. [Tower Theater Republican Primary Debate, 5/17/10: Question, 11:51; Denham Answer, 16:11]

2012: Denham Said He Opposed DREAM Act. In 2012, at a Latino Community Roundtable, Denham said he opposed the DREAM Act that would provide legal status for young people born to parents of undocumented immigrants who met certain criteria. [AmericasVoiceOnline.org10/01/12]

Denham Backed Extreme Arizona Anti-Immigration Law. During the Tower Theater Republican Primary Debate in May 2010, Denham said, “I applaud what Arizona has done. The federal government has not fulfilled its obligation, whether you’re talking about education funding, the funding of illegal immigrants that are incarcerated in our prisons, our hospitals, it is an expense that has gone out of control, and if our federal government is not going to take charge of its responsibility, it becomes a state’s rights issue, and we’ve got to defend our borders.” [YouTube, 16:47, Tower Theater Republican Primary Debate, 5/17/10]
