Washington Republicans Panic About Their Lawsuit Attacking People With Pre-Existing Conditions. It’s About Time

It took them awhile. But Washington Republicans are finally admitting that their lawsuit to eliminate the Affordable Care Act and protections for people with pre-existing conditions won’t just be a disaster for everyday American, it will also be a political disaster for Republicans this fall.

While dozens (literally) of races shift away from House Republicans, the President is scrambling to make up an executive order to protect Americans with pre-existing conditions. The problem for Republicans is the ACA already does that. And if Trump and House Republicans win their lawsuit this fall, all of those protections will go away.

Axios:

President Trump announced on Friday he will pursue an executive order requiring insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions, something that is already law.

Why it matters: The Affordable Care Act already requires insurers to cover pre-existing conditions. The Trump administration is currently arguing in a case before the Supreme Court to strike down that very law — including its pre-existing condition protections.

As a reminder: In May, the DCCC, DNC, DSCC, DGA, DAGA, and DLCC published a joint memo outlining how candidates at every level of the ballot plan on running against the Republican lawsuit to eliminate the ACA during a pandemic.

Statement from DCCC Spokesperson Robyn Patterson

“It’s shocking that after more than a decade of mounting an anti-health care crusade, Washington Republicans are realizing that they are not only hurting everyday Americans, they’re hurting themselves politically by trying to take away Americans’ health care during a deadly pandemic. Twenty million Americans could lose their health coverage this fall if Republicans win their lawsuit later this year. House Democrats are going to make sure voters hold them accountable for it this fall.”
