Called Out AGAIN: Rod Blum’s Office Continues to Make Blatantly False Statements & Iowans Aren’t Buying It

One-Term Wonder Rod Blum has had a very rough week, and it’s not going to get any better as long as he and his staff continue to make blatantly false statements about the First Amendment Defense Act, which the Des Moines Register called “ridiculous legislation.”

“Congressman Blum has lost all credibility in trying to spin the facts of an indefensible bill that is overly broad and discriminatory in nature,” said DCCC Spokesman Tyler Law. “It’s troubling that he continues to say things that aren’t based in reality.”

Here’s what Blum first said about the bill:

“Once again, just churches. I can’t say that enough. That’s what the bill is about, just churches…”

FALSE. An independent Fact Checker by The Gazette graded these statements an “F” because they had zero grounding in reality. Either Rod Blum intentionally said something that’s not true, or he didn’t read the bill. Either one is unacceptable.

Yesterday, Blum doubled-down on his false statements and KCRG wasn’t buying it either. In their televised segment on the protest, they directly call him out:

“Blum said that the bill is meant to keep churches from losing financial benefits from the government, such as a tax-exempt status, if they refuse to officiate same-sex weddings.

The Gazette/KCRG-TV9 Fact Check team found that it has language that would also let businesses refuse services, without punishment, based on religious and moral beliefs.”

Now Blum’s spokesman is saying the bill might be re-written – a bizarre admission that Blum knows this bill is a problem, but after proudly signing onto the bill, defending the bill, and doubling down on that defense again and again, it’s too little, too late.
