Insult to Injury: Mike Bost Bails on AARP Debate to Campaign with Paul Ryan

When Springfield insider Mike Bost claimed to have a “scheduling conflict” for an AARP debate today, we finally learned what he meant: he was campaigning with Paul Ryan, the very person who wrote the budget that AARP said would remove the Medicare guarantee. Here’s the evidence.

“Actions speak louder than words and Springfield insider Mike Bost has made his priorities clear by canceling the AARP debate just to attend a campaign event with Paul Ryan, the very person who wrote a budget that would raise Medicare costs on seniors – which AARP said would raise costs on seniors and remove the Medicare guarantee,” said Brandon Lorenz of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “Instead of protecting the Medicare guarantee, Bost backs a budget with out-of-whack priorities like giving tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy while raising costs for seniors, and that’s just not in touch with Illinois values.”

AARP: Republican Budget Would Remove the Medicare Guarantee. “Chairman Ryan’s proposed budget fails to address the high costs of health care and instead shifts costs onto seniors and future retirees. Repealing the benefits of the Affordable Care Act ignores the progress we’ve made to improve access to health care and protect against discrimination based on age, gender or medical history. Removing the Medicare guarantee of affordable health coverage for older Americans by implementing a premium support system and asking seniors and future retirees to pay more is not the right direction.” [AARP Press Release, 4/01/14]
