As Unemployment Numbers Rise in Iowa, Ashley Hinson Still Supporting Backers’ Effort to Take Away Health Care Options

Washington Republicans still suing to get rid of the entire Affordable Care Act in the middle of a pandemic

The Des Moines Register Editorial Board put it best last month, Washington Republicans’ lawsuit to do away with the entire Affordable Care Act in the middle of a pandemic “would have disastrous consequences for Iowans.” Yet amid rising coronavirus cases and unemployment numbers in Iowa this week, Ashley Hinson is still refusing to condemn her Washington backers’ lawsuit, which would do away with protections for 316,500 people in IA-01 with pre-existing conditions and make it much harder for unemployed Iowans to get health care.

According to the Des Moines Register:

The number of Iowans filing for unemployment is rising again.

There were 10,698 initial unemployment claims in the state last week, the U.S. Department of Labor reported Thursday, up 38% from 7,732 claims the prior week. At the same time, the number of Iowans filing continuing claims — claims for more than one week — dropped to 135,177 from 141,748.

[…]

While disappointing, Hinson’s support for the ACA lawsuit is unsurprising. For the last four years as a state representative, she has failed to demonstrate any form of independence from her party as Washington Republicans continue to try to destroy the entire Affordable Care Act.

“In the middle of a pandemic, families struggling to deal with layoffs and the threat of getting sick can’t trust Ashley Hinson to put their health care first. If Hinson really cared about ‘available and affordable’ health care as she once said, she would have already shown some independence from Washington Republicans and called for an end to this lawsuit,” said DCCC Spokesperson Brooke Goren.
