Poliquin’s publicity stunt on crisis “he admits hasn’t been a problem yet” garners ridicule from local press, his constituents

Yesterday, Maine Congressman Bruce Poliquin announced his intention to introduce a bill – based on a manufactured crisis – that spectacularly flopped in the face of ridicule and backlash from local press and his own constituents.

First, the Bangor Daily News reported that Poliquin admitted he was “unaware” whether his manufactured crisis – a loophole that allows terrorists to receive welfare – even exists.

In a follow-up story, NECN described Bruce’s bill as addressing “an issue he admits hasn’t been a problem yet.”

And while Bruce’s shameless stunt wouldn’t pass muster with local press, Poliquin’s constituents weren’t convinced either. WMTM Channel 8 interviewed a couple of Mainers who questioned Bruce’s priorities and “the need for the proposed legislation.”

Poliquin was even put on high hypocrisy alert.

MPBN reported that while Poliquin wants to close a loophole to his manufactured crisis, “he says he does not support a bipartisan bill to prevent suspected terrorists from buying guns.” The story highlighted a recent study that found that a current loophole had allowed more than 2,000 terror suspects to purchase weapons.

“Bruce Poliquin tried to score political points yesterday by creating a fictional crisis he admits doesn’t exist, and it spectacularly flopped in the face of significant ridicule and backlash from local press and his own constituents,” said Bryan Lesswing at the DCCC. “If Bruce’s desperate publicity stunt tells us anything, it’s that he can’t be taken seriously on national security and protecting Mainers.”
